Doylestown, Pa. (April 27) – The FDU-Florham baseball team (14-24, 7-14 MAC Free) clinched the series win against Delaware Valley (13-24, 4-17 MAC Free) with a massive final inning in game one that led to a 15-7 win, but the Devils could not complete the sweep with a 15-5 loss in game two.
Aaron Santos (Bridgewater, N.J.) and
Jake Hendershot (Martinsville, N.J.) both led the way with four hits, three RBI and two runs scored.
Brody Donovan (South Plainfield, N.J.) notched three hits on the afternoon with a home run and two runs scored while
Tyrus Chippendale (Middlesex, N.J.) also collected three hits with two RBI and two runs scored.
Game One
The Aggies took the lead first with five runs between the third and fourth innings for a 5-0 edge. The two runs in the third were scored on an error and a sacrifice fly while the runs in the fourth were brought in on an RBI single down the left field line, a wild pitch and an RBI single up the middle.
The Devils cut into the lead with a run in the fifth and sixth innings to narrow the deficit to 5-2. In the fifth inning, after facing two straight outs,
Tommy Sica (Wyckoff, N.J.) singled through the right side and advanced to second on a Chippendale walk. Chippendale made it all the way home on a Hendershot single to left field. The sixth inning is where Donovan hit his home run with a solo shot over the left field fence.
Delaware Valley kept Fairleigh Dickinson at bay with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 7-2. Thos runs were scored on a fielder's choice RBI and an RBI single through the left side.
Facing a game one loss if they could not produce big, FDU put together their best inning of the season with a massive 13-run inning that helped them take a commanding 15-7 lead. The defense held on in the bottom of the frame to take the game one win and the series.
Chris Kaponis (Burlington Twp., N.J.) made his 10
th start of the season and pitched two innings with no hits allowed but surrendered two runs (one earned). He also struck out two batters. It was
Michael Dunay (Stockholm, N.J.) nabbed the win for the Devils in relief. He pitched 2.1 innings, let up two runs on three hits and struck out two batters.
Game Two
For the first time in the series, the Devils got on the board first in the top of the second inning when an error allowed
John Rolli (Long Valley, N.J.) to score for a 1-0 lead.
Delaware Valley then caught fire when they scored seven unanswered runs between the second and third inning to hold a 7-2 advantage. The runs in the second were scored on an RBI single up the middle and a wild pitch. The Aggies scored on an RBI ground out, an RBI single to the pitcher, a wild pitch, an error and an RBI double to left center in the third.
FDU chipped away at the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Donovan opened the frame with a double down the left field line and advanced on a Rolli ground out.
Mark Geist (Middlesex, N.J.) was hit by pitch to put runners on the corners for Chippendale to bring Donovan home on an RBI single up the middle and move Geist to second. Geist was plated immediately on an RBI single down the left field line by Hendershot.
The Aggies took a commanding lead after they scored six unanswered runs with five runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth to take a 13-3 advantage.
The Devils scored two runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Rolli and an RBI single by Sica but was answered by the Aggies in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double and a sacrifice bunt RBI. After the last Delaware Valley run was scored, the game was called with a 15-5 win for DVU that avoided the series sweep.
Alex DeSimone (Long Valley, N.J.) suffered the loss in his first start of the season. He pitched two innings, allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits and struck out four batters.
FDU-Florham will wrap up its 2024 campaign at home as they host Centenary (N.J.) for a 3:30pm non-conference tilt.
