Hendershot Breaks Single-Season Stolen Bases Record; Baseball Walks off Delaware Valley, 6-5

Madison, N.J. (April 26) – Junior Jake Hendershot (Martinsville, N.J.) stamped his name on the FDU-Florham baseball (13-23, 6-13 MAC Free) record book when his three stolen bases today broke the single-season record with 27 stolen bases on the season. The Devils also walked off Delaware Valley (12-23, 3-16 MAC Free) to secure a 6-5 win in the first game of their three-game conference series.

Hendershot also added two hits, an RBI, a double and two runs scored to complete his day. Matt Aber (Basking Ridge, N.J.) also notched two hits with an RBI while Jack Giovenco (Allentown, N.J.) collected a hit, an RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases.

After two scoreless innings, The Aggies got the scoring going in the top of the third with a pair of runs on a bases-loaded walk and a fielder's choice RBI to take a 2-0 lead.

Fairleigh Dickinson cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with a run to make the score, 2-1. Hendershot walked and stole second to lead off the inning. After Giovenco was hit by pitch, the duo successfully executed the double steal and put themselves in scoring position for Aaron Santos (Bridgewater, N.J.), who grounded out but brought home Hendershot for the run.

Delaware Valley added another two runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-1 edge in the contest. They scored those runs on a two-run homer over the left field fence.

A three-run bottom of the six from FDU tied the contest a 4-4. Tyrus Chippendale (Middlesex, N.J.) led off with a walk and advanced on a double down the left field line by Hendershot. Giovenco plated Chippendale on an RBI single through the left side. Giovenco stole second and Hendershot scored on a wild pitch. Aber scored Giovenco on an RBI single through the right side to equalize the game.

Both teams traded runs in the seventh inning to make the score 5-5 heading into the eighth inning. The Aggies scored on an RBI single to center field but was answered in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single bunt from Hendershot that brought Dylan Hode (Manalapan, N.J.) across home plate. Hendershot's stolen base record came right after he drove in the tying run.

The game came down to the bottom of the ninth inning for FDU-Florham. Brody Donovan (South Plainfield, N.J.) walked and was subbed out by Tommy Sica (Wyckoff, N.J.), who came in to pinch run. After a single up the middle from John Rolli (Long Valley, N.J.) moved Sica to second, a single to center field by Chippendale helped Sica round third and make it all the way home for the win.

The Devils saw four Devils hit the mound today. Evan Sabo (Hillsborough, N.J.) made his first collegiate start today. He pitched three innings, allowed two runs on four hits and struck out two batters. Jake Stollar (Flemington, N.J.) led the way on the mound in strikeouts with four in two innings. Ryan Krug (Long Hill, N.J.) was the pitcher who secured the win in two innings pitched. He was flawless on the rubber retiring all six batters he faced.

FDU-Florham will play the rest of their MAC Freedom series in Doylestown, Pa. against Delaware Valley with the first game of doubleheader action starting at 12:00 pm.
