Madison, NJ (April 24) – The FDU-Florham Women's Lacrosse (5-8, 2-4 MAC Freedom) held their lead until the final minutes of the game as late goals from Lebanon Valley (11-5, 6-0 MAC Freedom) sunk the Devils 13-12 on Wednesday night.
Claudia Zappia (South Brunswick, NJ) led the Devils with six points consisting of four goals and two assists.
Jenna Ranney (Forest Hills, MD) followed with six goals and two assists.
Alison Kozik(Ellington, CT) got the loss in the cage for the Devils saving 11 of the 24 shots faced.
Alyssa Wene led the Dutchmen with six goals. Jamie Handwerger got the win in the net saving nine shots.
After a back-and-forth segment from both teams, Zappia got the Devils on the board scoring at the 8:43 mark. Ranney quickly followed that up off a pass from Zappia to make the score 2-0. Shortly after, Lebanon Valley was able to score to get their first goal of the night. The Devils outscored the Dutchmen 3-2 in the remainder of the first quarter as Ranney,
Alexis Ashton (Blairstown, NJ), and
Madison Ballesteros (Parsippany, NJ) were able to find the back of the net to end the quarter with a score of 3-5.
FDU opened the second quarter scoring three unanswered goals to extend their lead 8-3. This run ended at the 5:12 mark as the Dutchmen scored the last two goals of the quarter. This saw the Devils going into halftime at an 8-5 advantage.
Julianna Medina (Linwood, NJ) and Zappia extended the Devil's lead in the third quarter as they both scored to make it a 10-5 game. Lebanon Valley stopped that run as Alyssa Wene scored two back-to-back goals to make the score 10-7 to end the third quarter.
The Devils started the fourth quarter off with a fastbreak goal from Ballesteros at the 13:36 mark. The Dutchmen then went on to score five unanswered goals to get their first lead of the night at the 4:48 mark. Zappia tied the game 12-12 with 40 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime. However, after double overtime, the Dutchmen scored to sink the Devils 13-12.
As a team, FDU-Florham took 29 shots, 17 ground balls, and 13 draw controls. The Devils also went 16-19 on clear attempts.
Lebanon Valley totaled 24 shots on goal, 11 ground balls, and 17 draw controls.
FDU-Florham is scheduled to continue MAC Freedom play as they are set to travel to Misericordia University on Saturday, April 27 at 1:00 pm.
