Softball Drops MAC Freedom Doubleheader to Misericordia

Dallas, PA (April 24) – The FDU-Florham Softball team (15-15, 4-7 MAC Freedom) traveled to the Misericordia Cougars (21-11, 10-2 MAC Freedom) for a MAC Freedom contest and found themselves traveling back to Madison with a 6-0 and 11-4 losses to Cougars.

Game 1:

Neither team was able to bring home a runner, but both teams did see at least one hit in the third inning. FDU-Florham collected their first hit of the doubleheader after Kristen Tigar (Hazlet, NJ) sent the ball into the field for a base hit.

Misericordia added their first hit in the third inning, along with their second hit and first run of the game after the runner on third was sent to home with a base hit. The Cougars added their second run of the game before the inning ended.

Unfortunately, the Devils were not able to produce any other hits in game one as the Cougars added a run in the fifth inning and capped the game with three runs in the sixth inning, 6-0.

Pitching in the circle for the Devils was first Kelly Cornog (Newtown Square, PA) (10-7) as she received the loss but not without throwing four strikeouts while facing 33 batters. Cougar Marissa Kelly was seen in the circle for seven innings and recorded only two strikeouts on twenty-three batters.

Game 2:

After each team played a defensive three-and-out first inning, FDU-Florham was the first to claim a hit in the second inning after the ball was sent up the middle for a base hit, off the bat of Riley Signor (Media, PA). Misericordia followed in the bottom of the second with a base hit of their own and sent the runner on second home with an RBI double, 1-0.

The Devils found themselves with another two hits in the top of the third inning coming from Kylee Berg (Bordentown, NJ) as she singled to center field, and Heather Priante (Howell, NJ) put down the bunt to advance Berg to second base. The Cougars were able to collect all three outs before the Devils had a chance to score at home.

Misericordia found a majority of their runs in their offensive effort of the third inning as a three-run home run upped their score to 4-0 and another home run two batters later recorded the Cougar's fifth run.

FDU-Florham started its offensive drive in the fourth inning as Jada Lambright (Clifton Park, NY) doubled to bring in the first run, and an error by the shortstop brought in another two runs to have the scoreboard read 5-3. The Cougars expanded their lead with another two RBI in the bottom of the inning.

Fighting for a comeback, the Devils sent Abigail Rodriguez (Woodbridge, NJ) up to the plate for a base hit and received an RBI single to close the scoring difference within three runs, 7-4.

The fifth inning was not in favor of the Devils' defense as another two-run homer upped the Cougar's score to nine runs and capped the score in the bottom of the sixth inning with another two RBI, 11-4.

Graduate Student Bianca DiSanto (Colonia, NJ) (2-3) pitched through six innings with three strikeouts while facing 35 batters. Collecting the win for Misericordia was Jennifer Milisits (6-4) as she struck out one batter while facing a total of fourteen.

FDU-Florham will face King's on Friday, April 26 at 4 pm to finish the MAC Freedom contest from April 10. The game was halted with a 4-4 tie after the completion of the fourth inning, due to darkness.
