Madison, NJ (March 9) –
Alexis Ashton(Blairstown, NJ) was one goal short of tying the single-game record with nine goals to lead the FDU-Florham Women's Lacrosse (1-1) team to a 16-11 victory over Mount Saint Mary College (3-2).
Ashton was the leader in points totaling nine for the day, including three hattricks.
Jenna Ranney(Forest Hill, MD) followed accumulating four points with two goals and two assists.
Alison Kozik(Ellington, CT) got the win in the cage for the Devils making five saves.
Delisianna Naccarato led the way for the Knights with three goals and two assists. Liz Petrellese got the loss in the net saving 10 out of 26 shots.
The Knights took the early lead scoring a goal on their first drive of the game. However, the Devils quickly took the 2-1 lead as Ashton and Ranney scored back-to-back goals. Mount Saint Mary came back at the 7:53 mark to tie the game 2-2. FDU put a stop to the Knights's comeback attempt as Ashton scored three goals and Ranney scored one to end the first quarter with a score of 6-2.
Mount Saint Mary started the second half scoring two goals less than twi minutes apart to make the score 6-4. The Devils had other plans as they went on to score three unanswered goals. Ashton added another two goals to her total, and
Julianna Medina (Linwood, NJ) scored one with 10:12 to go. That run ended the scoring for the first half making the score 9-4 going into halftime.
The Knights opened the third quarter to come back scoring three unanswered goals to make the score 8-9.
Madison Ballesteros (Parsippany, NJ) answered right back scoring her first career goal with 34 seconds left in the third quarter. Mount Saint Mary cut their deficit by one point again scoring with three seconds left to make the score at the end of the third 10-9.
The Knights were able to tie the game 10-10 with 9:47 remaining in the fourth quarter. Ballesteros took back the Devils lead scoring off the draw with a pass from Medina at the 9:27 mark to make the score 10-11. The Devils took off from there scoring five more goals.
Claudia Zappia (South Brunswick, NJ), Medina, and Ashton scored during that Devils sequence. This saw FDU ending the game with a score of 16-11 getting the Devils their first win of the season.
As a team FDU-Florham took 30 shots with 26 being on goal, 20 ground balls, and 18 draw controls. The Devils also went 15-17 on clear attempts.
Mount Saint Mary totaled 16 shots on goal, 14 ground balls, and 12 draw controls.
FDU-Florham hits the road to compete against the University of Hartford for their next contest on Tuesday, March 12 at 1:00 pm.
