Newark, N.J. (March 5) – Rutgers-Newark (3-3) faced a four-run deficit heading into the final frame of action but were able to complete the comeback against the FDU-Florham baseball team (3-4) as the Scarlet Raiders walked off the Devils, 8-7 on Tuesday night.
The Devils offense was led by
Jake Hendershot (Martinsville, N.J.), who had the lone multi-hit game for FDU when he batted two-for-three with a double, an RBI and crossed home plate three times.
Matt Aber (Basking Ridge, N.J.) drove in a run and scored a run while
Tyrus Chippendale (Middlesex, N.J.) also collected an RBI during the game.
Hendershot led off the game with a double to right field and reached third on a ground out by Aber. He eventually scored on a wild pitch to give the Devils a 1-0 lead early. The Scarlet Raiders answered in the bottom of the inning on a single RBI through the left side to tie the game at one apiece.
After a scoreless second inning, Hendershot once again led off and got on base on a single to right field. A sacrifice bunt by Aber moved Hendershot to second and he advanced to third on a wild pitch. A balk completed his trip around the bases and gave Fairleigh Dickinson a 2-1 edge. Rutgers-Newark once again answered in the bottom of the frame but doubled the run total this time on a two-RBI single up the middle that gave them their first lead of the game, 3-2.
It wasn't until the top of the sixth where the lead changed again, but this time the Devils really shifted the game when they scored five runs that gave them a 7-3 lead. Faced with two outs,
Zach Revuelta (Union, N.J.) was walked and was sent to second on a single to third base by
Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.). Another walk on
Dylan Hode's (Manalapan, N.J.) at bat set up four straight bases-loaded walks that gave FDU a 6-3 lead. Aber scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Backs against the wall in the bottom of the ninth, The Scarlet Raiders got hot at the right time when a triple from the lead-off batter and a walk set up a three-run homer for Eric Recchia that helped cut into the lead, 7-6. A throwing error helped even the score and eventually a single RBI through the right side by Joseph Bernado capped off the comeback for Rutgers-Newark and gave them the 8-7 win.
Jonathan Rodenhaver (Port Republic, Md.) got his third start of the season today. He pitched three innings, surrendered three runs and struck out four batters.
Chris Kaponis (Burlington Twp., N.J.) and
Nick Rizos (Woodridge, N.J.) both came in as relief pitchers and allowed no runs and each struck out four batters.
Ryan Krug (Long Hill, N.J.) was the last pitcher to enter the game for the Devils and suffered the loss in the decision.
FDU-Florham has a good bounce-back opportunity at home as they host Mount Saint Vincent on Thursday, March 7 with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 pm.
