Madison, N.J. (March 7) –The FDU-Florham baseball team (3-5) hosted Mount Saint Vincent for a non-conference matchup on Thursday afternoon where the Dolphins downed the Devils, 9-1.
The Devils saw five different players collect hits during the day including
Christopher Leon (Union, N.J.) who notched the teams lone extra base hit with a double.
Anthony Di Chiara (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored the lone run for the Devils in the game.
MSV scored a pair of runs right out of the gate with a single RBI to center field and a sacrifice fly to left field that gave the Dolphins a 2-0 lead. They would then take a 5-0 advantage after three innings when the team scored a run in the top of the second on an RBI-single to right field and collected two runs in the top of the third on a two-RBI single up the middle.
After three scoreless innings, the Dolphins extended their lead in the seventh on a single up the middle for a 6-0 edge. Mount Saint Vincent took a 9-0 lead into the final half inning of play when they scored a two-run single to right field in the eighth and a single RBI to the shortstop in the ninth.
Leon led off for the Devils in the bottom of the ninth where he doubled to centerfield for the Devils fifth hit of the day.
Anthony Di Chiara (Massapequa, N.Y.) singled to third base and moved Leon to third base where he eventually scored on a wild pitch. Mount Saint Vincent secured the rest of the outs they needed after the score and secured the win.
Christian Weippert (Long Valley, N.J.) got the start but suffered the defeat after pitching 1.2 innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out a batter. His record fell to 1-2 on the year.
Eddie Appollina (Annandale, N.J.) pitched 4.1 innings in relief where he struck out six batters and surrendered only one run on three hits.
FDU-Florham now heads down to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for their four-game spring break trip in The Ripken Experience which will start with Dean College on Sunday, March 9 at 9:00 am.
