Madison, NJ (March 29) – With the wind and dirt swirling around, the FDU-Florham Softball team was not only surrounded by a cloud of dust but also by #20 ranked, Lebanon Valley, in MAC Freedom doubleheader action. The Devils were handed two losses as the Dutchman won 7-2 in game one and 7-0 in game two.
Game 1:
Lebanon Valley got right to work by adding their first run of the series in the first inning after a ground-out brought in the RBI. The Dutchman added three runs in the second inning before the Devils could put a run up in the third inning.
FDU-Florham's first run of the day was a sacrifice fly to right field from
Jada Lambright (Clifton Park, NY) to bring in
Kristen Tigar (Hazlet, NJ) for the RBI. With momentum starting to build, first-year
Riley Signor (Media, Pa) kept it going with RBI double to right field for the Devils' second run of the game, 4-2.
Despite not scoring for the remainder of the game, the Devils managed to send the ball into the field twice in the fifth inning with a hit each coming from
Lambright and
Kylee Berg (Bordentown, PA).
The bottom of the sixth inning held the FDU-Florham's final hit of the game and it belonged to
Grace Capparelli (South Plainfield, NJ) as she was able to find the ball a spot in right field for a single.
Lebanon Valley was able to connect in the fifth and seventh innings for an additional two runs and to secure the 7-2 over the Devils in game one.
FDU-Florham saw two pitchers in the circle for game one, but the loss fell upon
Kelly Cornog (Newtown Square, PA) (6-6) as she threw in five innings and recorded one strikeout on 26 batters. Erin Sinatra (8-1) collected the win for Lebanon Valley with six strikeouts through seven innings, while facing a total of 30 batters.
Game 2:
The first inning resulted in a 0-0 showing for both sides, however, both teams were able to steal a hit off each other. For the Devils,
Signor claimed her second hit of the day with a single to left field.
The second inning was in favor of Lebanon Valley as they added their first two runs of the game. FDU-Florham did see another base hit, this time from
Victoria Fantozzi (Hillsborough, NJ) as she found a gap in right field for a single.
The Devils saw another four hits combined through the third, fourth, and fifth innings but were not able to bring one of those hits around all the bases as they found themselves scoreless in game two. Lebanon Valley added its final two runs in the fifth inning, before completing the full game in the seventh inning with 7-0 score over the Devils.
Appearing in the circle in game two for the Devils was
Fantozzi (3-3) as she pitched through the first four innings and struck out on batters while facing a total of 24. Jordan Walter (6-3) pitched the entire game for Lebanon Valley and recorded five strikeouts on 28 batters.
FDU-Florham will remain home for their next two contests, including a non-conference doubleheader match-up against Neumann on Thursday, April 4. The games will start at 3pm and 6pm and will be played in support of Morgan's Message.
