Mansfield, Conn. (March 24) – The FDU-Florham women's lacrosse (3-3) team traveled to take on Eastern Connecticut State (3-4) and secured a road win as the Devils bested the Warriors, 18-12 on Sunday afternoon.
The trio of
Alexis Ashton (Blairstown, N.J.), Julianna Medina (Linwood, N.J.) and
Claudia Zappia (South Brunswick, N.J.) were a part of every single goal for the Devils today with Ashton leading the way with seven goals and an assist, Medina collecting five goals and Zappia notching four goals and three assists. Ashton and Medina also accounted for 21 of the Devils 22 draw controls while
Anacapri Slack (Voorhees, N.J.) was responsible for the other two FDU goals.
Allison Kozik (Ellington, Conn.) got the win in net with nine saves on the afternoon. The Warriors were led by Abby Parisi, who came off the bench and delivered a hat trick with an assist. Mackenzie Brown was credited with the loss in the cage and made 12 saves on the afternoon.
The Warriors scored two-straight goals to open up the game but were answered by goals from Ashton and Medina that nodded the game up at two apiece at the 10:39 timestamp in the first. After the two teams exchanged goals, East Conn scored three straight times to take a 6-3 lead with 39 seconds left to go in the first period. Just before the first quarter closed, Slack scored off a pass from Ashton to make the score 6-4 heading into the second period.
Eastern Connecticut started off scoring in the second quarter with a goal at the 14:30 mark but it was Fairleigh Dickinson who flipped momentum and scored five straight goals to take a 9-7 lead with 9:46 left to go in the first half. Three of those goals were scored by Ashton with Slack and Medina scoring the others while
Abigail Fortemps (Denville, N.J.) assisted two of Ashton's goals. East Conn found another goal in the quarter but the scoring in the first half was closed out with a pair of goals from Zappia who helped FDU take an 11-8 lead into the second half.
The third quarter only saw three total goals with the Warriors scoring first at the 10:33 timestamp but was answered by a pair of goals from the Devils, first from Medina off an assist from
Erica Blackburn (Marlboro, N.J.) and then by Zappia off a pass from Fortemps to helps FDU-Florham take a 13-9 advantage into the fourth quarter.
The trend continued with the Warriors scoring first to begin the quarter, which they did at the 13:37 timestamp in the fourth quarter. The Devils scored three straight goals after that point with Ashton scoring twice and Medina once for a 16-10 lead. Eastern Connecticut was not able to recover from that lead and only matched Fairleigh Dickinson in goals down the stretch with two goals each and the Devils eventually took the win, 18-12
As a team, The Devils took 34 shots including 30 on goal, 20 ground balls and 22 draw controls. FDU also converted 16-of-18 clear attempts.
For the Warriors, they totaled 27 shots with 21 shots on goal, 15 ground balls and 12 draw controls. Eastern Connecticut also succeeded on 18-of-23 clear attempts.
FDU-Florham is back in action on Friday, March 29 for a home contest on Robert T. Shields Field against Kean for a 5:00 pm non-conference showdown
