Madison, N.J. (March 22) –The FDU-Florham baseball team (7-10, 2-2 MAC Free) fell in the first game of their three-game MAC Freedom series against Arcadia on the road, 20-6 on Friday afternoon.
Jake Hendershot (Martinsville, N.J.) and
Matt Aber (Basking Ridge, N.J.) both led the day offensively with two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
Dylan Hode (Manalapan, N.J.) and
Brody Donovan (South Plainfield, N.J.) each collected a pair of hits in the game while
Anthony Di Chiara (Massapequa, N.Y.) batted in two runs.
The Knights got their big afternoon going in the bottom of the second inning when an RBI single through the right side and a grand slam posted five runs on the board for the early advantage. Arcadia then found a run in the third inning on another RBI single through the left side and three of runs in the fourth inning on an error and a two-run RBI to left field that gave them a 9-0 edge.
FDU finally got on the board in the top of the seventh inning with a pair of runs that cut into the lead, 9-2. Both
Tommy Sica (Wyckoff, N.J.) and
John Rolli (Long Valley, N.J.) reached on bases-on-balls, and each moved a base on a single through the left side by
Tyrus Chippendale (Middlesex, N.J.) for a bases-loaded situation. The two runs were then brought in back-to-back on a Hendershot RBI single to right field and a sacrifice fly by Aber that plated Rolli.
Arcadia's offense caught fire in the bottom of the seventh inning and it carried over to the eighth when they totaled 11 runs to give them a commanding 20-2 lead.
The Devils did not go down without a fight though when they scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning. Faced with two outs, Hendershot singled to the shortstop and advanced to second on an Aber single through the left side. Di Chiara subbed in as a pinch hitter for Donovan and came up big during his only at bat of the game when he doubled down the left field line that scored both Hendershot and Aber.
Zach Revuelta (Union, N.J.) answered Di Chiara's double with of of his own to left field and plated the first year. After
Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) was walked, Sica connected with the ball for an RBI single through the left side to bring Revuelta home before the final out was recorded.
For the second straight game, The Devils saw eight different pitchers get a chance on the rubber today.
Eddie Appollina (Annandale, N.J.) got the start and suffered the loss after pitching two innings and surrendering five runs on six hits.
Sebastian Alverio (Belleville, N.J.) stood out in relief when he entered in the fourth inning, allowed no hits and struck out two of three batters faced.
FDU-Florham returns home for the rest of their MAC Freedom series on Sunday, March 24 with the first game of their doubleheader scheduled for 12:00pm
