Madison, N.J. (March 20) –The FDU-Florham baseball team (7-9) was tripped up today during their non-conference matchup against Merchant Marine, 6-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Devils saw five hits on the afternoon, two of which came from
Matt Aber (Basking Ridge, N.J.) who collected an RBI double as well.
Jake Hendershot (Martinsville, N.J.) also collected a hit and an RBI during the matchup while
John Rolli (Long Valley, N.J.) and
Dylan Hode (Manalapan, N.J.) were the ones who crossed home plate.
Defense held strong for both teams in the first inning before the Mariners pushed themselves out in front with a four-run top of the second inning. They scored runs on a fielding error, an RBI single up the middle, a throwing error and an RBI single to second base to take a 4-0 advantage.
Fairleigh Dickinson was able to cut into the lead in the bottom of the third when they found a pair of runs to halve the Merchant Marine edge to 4-2. Rolli got things going with a single to centerfield. Hode reached on a fielding error during his at bat that moved Rolli to second. Both men advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by
Tyrus Chippendale (Middlesex, N.J.). A sacrifice fly by Hendershot plated Rolli and Aber's RBI double to left center scored Hode before the Mariners got out of the inning.
Merchant Marine's defense held strong the rest of the way and they were also able to score insurance runs with a run scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning and an RBI single to center field in the ninth inning to eventually seal a 6-2 win.
It was a bullpen day for the Devils in the pitching department, with eight different pitchers all seeing action.
Ben Cohen (Malibu, Calif.) got the start and suffered loss in the decision. He pitched two innings and allowed three hits and four runs (zero earned) and struck out a team-high four batters.
Robbie Hughes (Union, N.J.) stood out in relief when he came into the game in the fourth inning and struck out the side he faced.
FDU-Florham is set for their next three-game MAC Freedom series, this time against receiving votes Arcadia. The first game will be played in Glenside, Pa. on Friday, March 22 with a single game starting at 3:30pm.
