Aber’s Walk-Off Single Highlights Doubleheader Split with King’s

Madison, N.J. (March 16) –Sophomore Matt Aber (Basking Ridge, N.J.) came up clutch for the FDU-Florham baseball team (7-8, 2-1 MAC Free) in game one of their MAC Freedom doubleheader against King's (5-8, 1-2 MAC Free) with a walk-off single to help secure the conference series win, but the Devils could not complete the sweep as they fell to the Monarchs in game two, 10-3 on Saturday afternoon.

Offensively, Tyrus Chippendale (Middlesex, N.J.) totaled four hits in two games with an RBI and a run scored. Brody Donovan (South Plainfield, N.J.), Dylan Hode (Manalapan, N.J) and Aber all collected three hits on the day. Aber also notched two RBI and two runs scored while Donovan and Hode each batted in a run.

Game One

The Monarchs scored first in the opening inning of the day when a throwing error with runners on the corners brought home the runner on third for a 1-0 lead.

FDU flipped the game in their favor with a four-run bottom of the fifth inning to help take a 4-1 advantage. Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) singled on a bunt and put himself in scoring position when he stole second.  The Devils then saw three straight RBI doubles with Hode down the left field line, Chippendale down the right field line and Jake Hendershot (Martinsville, N.J.). After a passed ball moved Hendershot to third, Aber tripled to right center field to close out the scoring in the inning.

Backs against the wall in the bottom of the seventh, the final inning in game one of a doubleheader in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC), King's got the runs they needed to tie the game 4-4 and extend the game. They found those runs on a double to right center, an RBI single down the right field line and an RBI single down the right field line.

In the bottom of the ninth, Peter Longo (Cherry Hill, N.J.) led off reaching on a base-on-balls and was replaced by Sean Wodell (Freehold, N.J.). Chippendale singled up the middle to advance Wodell and Wodell made it home on Aber's walk-off single to right field to secure the 5-4 win for Fairleigh Dickinson.

Chris Kaponis (Burlington, Twp., N.J.) started on the mound for the Devils today. He pitched six innings, allowed only two hits and an unearned run and struck out seven batters. Ryan Krug (Long Hill, N.J.) came into the game in the eighth inning and secured the win with two innings pitched, allowed only one hit and struck out two batters.

They scored two runs in the second on a throwing error and a bases-loaded walk, one run in the third on an RBI single down the left field line and a run in the fourth on an RBI single to center field.
