22-Hit Performance Propels Baseball Past CCNY, 15-3

Madison, N.J. (March 1) – The FDU-Florham baseball team (3-3) was as hot as could be offensively, totaling a 22-hit performance that propelled the Devils past the City College of New York, 15-3 during Friday's non-conference action.

Matt Aber (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Tyrus Chippendale (Middlesex, N.J.) both led the way with four hits. Aber collected three RBI while Chippendale notched two Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) tied Aber on the day with three RBI brought in on three-of-five hitting while Jake Hendershot's (Martinsville, N.J.) two hits on the day were both triples.

The Devils got going right away in the bottom of the first when Hendershot tripled to right center and was immediately driven in on a single RBI up the middle by Aber to give the Devils a 1-0 lead.

The Beavers doubled down in the top of the second when an error allowed two runners to score and flipped the advantage to them, 2-1. CCNY extended their lead to a 3-1 edge in the third with an RBI-single to right field.

Fairleigh Dickinson retook the lead in the bottom frame of the third inning with four runs to take a 5-3 lead. Hendershot once again led off with a triple and was brought home immediately by Aber who singled to right field. Chippendale singled through the right side and advanced to second on a wild pitch that also brought Aber to third. That set up Brody Donovan (South Plainfield, N.J.) with a double down the left field line that brought home both men. The Devils saw bases-loaded when John Rolli (Long Valley, N.J.) was hit by pitch and Zach Revuelta (Union, N.J.) singled up the middle that allowed Giovenco to plate Donovan for the final run of the inning, despite him grounding out.

After a scoreless fourth inning, FDU found another run in the fifth inning. Rolli singled to third base and then advanced to second on a throwing error that set him up to be plated by Giovenco on a single down the left field line for a 6-3 lead.

It was during the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings when the Devils blew the doors off the game with a combined nine runs between both of them. In the bottom of the seventh, runs were scored on a fielding error that scored Donovan, a sacrifice fly by Dylan Hode (Manalapan, N.J.) that plated Rolli, Aber and Chippendale singles through the right side and a throwing error.

In the eighth inning, Mason Cohen (Demarest, N.J.) tripled on his first collegiate at-bat and drove home Peter Longo (Cherry Hill, N.J.) for an RBI. Giovenco immediately brought home Cohen on a single up the middle and after a bases-loaded situation, the Devils found two more runs on a throwing error by the third baseman and a sacrifice fly by Aaron Santos (Bridgewater, N.J.) that closed out the scoring for FDU and eventually led them to a 15-3 win.

Robbie Hughes (Union, N.J.) got his second starting nod of the season today. He pitched 2.2 innings, allowed three runs (one earned) and struck out two batters. After Hughes exited, it was a bullpen day for the Devils that saw six different pitchers get a chance to pitch. Christian Weippert (Long Valley, N.J.), who relieved Hughes, was awarded the win as the relief pitcher of record when the Devils took the lead.

FDU-Florham heads on the road for their first true road contest as the Devils travel for non-conference action against Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday, March 5  for a 3:30pm start.
