Baseball Edges New Jersey City, 4-2

Madison, N.J. (February 27) – The FDU-Florham baseball team (2-3) hosted New Jersey City (1-1) for non-conference action today and the Devils edged the Gothic Knights, 4-2 to secure their second win in four days on Vincent J. and Lenda F. Namoli Ballpark.

Aaron Santos (Middlesex, N.J.) kept his bat hot with a three-for-three showing today with two RBI and a double. Brody Donovan (South Plainfield, N.J.) also had a multi-hit day when he went two-for-four with an RBI. Matt Aber (Basking Ridge, N.J.)  collected a double and crossed homeplate twice on the day

New Jersey City took advantage of a fielding error in the first inning that allowed them to put the first run on the board right out of the gate. The Devils did not allow the Gothic Knights to hold the lead for very long though as they scored two runs in the bottom of the frame to hold a 2-1 advantage. Aber got the hitting going with a double to left center that was followed up by Tyrus Chippendale (Middlesex, N.J.) to reach first on a walk. Santos then plated Aber on an RBI double down the left line that was followed up by a ground-out RBI by Donovan that plated Chippendale.

After three scoreless innings, Fairleigh Dickinson extended their lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mark Geist (Middlesex, N.J.) walked to start the frame and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.). A balk put Geist on third and he was sent home on a sacrifice fly to right field by Dylan Hode (Manalapan, N.J.).

The Gothic Knights put the game back to a one-score lead in the top of the seventh inning when a bases-loaded walk cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Devils found one more run in the contest in the bottom of the eighth inning. Aber walked and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chippendale. Aber advanced to third on a wild pitch and was plated on a sacrifice fly by Santos to give FDU a 4-2 lead.

NJCU had a chance to extend the game in the top of the ninth but an impressive diving catch in right field by Donovan, another fly out to Donovan and a strike out with two runners on base, sealed the non-conference win for baseball.

Jonathan Rodenhaver (Port Republic, Md.) got the win on the mound for FDU. He pitched five innings, allowed five hits and one run and he struck out three batters. Michael Dunay (Stockholm, N.J.) came into the game in the eighth inning where he closed out the last two innings when he allowed only one hit and nothced a strikeout.

FDU-Florham is back at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Namoli Ballpark for the fourth of their five-game homestand when they host CCNY on Friday, March 1. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
