Madison, NJ (November 8) - FDU-Florham Women's Basketball team played against Rochester in the Chuck Resler Tournament in their season opener. Unfortunately, they fell in their first match of the season by a score of 84-49.
FDU-Florham (0-1, 0-0 MAC Freedom) were led by
Kolby Lynch (Morristown, NJ), who scored 11 points and three rebounds.
Amaya Fifield (Cambridge, M.A.) also had a great performance in her first career game as a Devil, scoring nine points and one assist.
Rochester (1-0, 0-0 UAA) were led by Abby Gress, who scored 19 points and earned one assist.
The first quarter started with eight straight points by the Yellow Jackets, before Lynch scored on a layup to give the Devils their first points of the season. The quarter was won by Rochester, as they scored most of the points. With 20 seconds left in the quarter
Julia Vazquez (Bound Brook, NJ) drained a three pointer. After a Yellow Jacket three-pointer, Rochester lead the game 27-12 at the end of the first 15 minutes.
The second quarter was dominated by Rochester, as after a Vazquez jump shot, the Yellow Jackets scored 19 straight points to reach halftime with a score of 53-16 in Rochester's favor.
After a punch in the mouth, FDU fought back in the third quarter, as after some traded points, FDU capped off the third quarter scoring six straight points, including a fast break layup by
Christina Centeno (Bayonne, NJ), to leave the score at 63-32 with 15 minutes remaining in the game.
The fourth quarter saw some action from some of the veterans of the team, as both
Kristen Mellon (Southampton, NJ) and
Destiny Knight (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored buckets for the Devils, including a 3 pointer from Knight. A jump shot by
Gabriella Nieves (East Brunswick, NJ) ended being the final points of the game for the Devils, as the score ended as a win for the Yellow Jackets by a score of 84-49.
FDU-Florham shot 29.6-percent (21-71) from the floor, 15-percent (3-20) from three-point range, and 100 percent (4-4) from the free throw line, while Rochester shot 43.1-percent (31-for-72) from the floor, 36.0-percent (9-25) from three point range and 56.5-percent (13-for-23) from the free throw line.
Rochester ended with more points off turnovers (21-10), second chance points (16-14), and points from the bench (43-25). They also scored more points in the paint (42-24) and dominated in fast break points (27-2).
The Devils will participate in the consolation game in the Chuck Resler Tournament on November 9
th at 1:00 PM at Rochester College. They will be taking on Franklin and Marshall, after they fell to Whitmore 63-48.
