DeSales Snaps Women's Basketball Win Streak, 90-40

Madison, NJ (January 6) – The FDU-Florham Women's Basketball team hosted MAC Freedom Opponent DeSales and suffered a 90-40 loss against the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon.

FDU-Florham (8-4, 1-1 MAC Freedom) saw their first loss in 8 games as their seven-game win streak came to an end. In scoring Neysa Aguilar (Middlesex, NJ) led the Devils with 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists. Julia Vazquez (Bound Brook, NJ) and Gabrielle Walker (Old Bridge, NJ) both put up five points. 

DeSales (11-2, 2-0 MAC Freedom) had multiple players in double digit figures including Mikaela Reese who grabbed 10 rebounds to go along with 21 points.

The first basket was not scored until 2 minutes in when Christina Centeno (Bayonne, NJ) sunk a three-pointer to put the Devils up on the scoreboard.

Both teams continued the momentum into their next offensive plays as the score was tied 10-10 at the 3:07 mark. FDU-Florham was able to breakaway to claim the lead at the end of the first quarter, 17-14.

DeSales found their rhythm in the second quarter as the Bulldogs outscored FDU 36-6, to take a 27-point lead heading into half time.

FDU-Florham tired their best to cut the deficit down as they saw their best quarter from the free throw line by shooting 88.89-percent (8-9), but it was not enough as the Bulldogs kept making thier shots to up the score 76-35 by the end of the third quarter.

The Devils were able to slow down DeSales' scoring pace as they held the Bulldogs to only 14 points in the fourth quarter. Closing out for the game for the Devils was Kristen Mellon (Southampton, NJ) as she converted a jumper in the final two minutes, her first collegiate points.

DeSales ultimately handed FDU-Florham the 90-40 loss for their first conference meeting of the season.

FDU-Florham shot 25.5 (14-for-55) from the floor, 16.7-percent (2-for-12) from three point range and 76.9-percent (10-for-13) from the free throw line, while DeSales shot 50.7-percent (36-for-71) from the floor, 39.1-percent (9-for-23) from three point range and 56.3-percent (9-for-16) from the free throw line.

DeSales scored 54 points in the paint, 31 points of the fast break, and 27 points off of FDU-Florham's turnovers.

FDU-Florham will be away at Delaware Valley for their next contest on Wednesday, January 10. The MAC Freedom contest will tip-off at 6pm.
