Women's Basketball Escapes King's, 64-61

Wilkes-Barre, PA (January 3) – For their first Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC Freedom) contest of the season, the FDU-Florham Women's Basketball team traveled to King's College and pulled away from the Monarchs with a 64–61 win.

FDU-Florham (8-3, 1-0 MAC Freedom) captured their first MAC Freedom win since 2021 and was led by first-year's Neysa Aguilar (Middlesex, NJ) and Shannon Tighe (Wayne, NJ). Aguilar was the game's leading scorer as she contributed 27 points and Tighe cleaned up the paint with 22 rebounds and 19 points.

King's (3-9, 0-1 MAC Freedom) was led by Kathy Shepherd who shot lights out for 18 points.

The ball fell in the basket of both teams throughout the first quarter but was mostly in favor of FDU-Florham, as they were able to keep their lead since the 2-2 tie within the first minute of the game. A layup from Carla Seyfarth (South Brunswick, NJ) gave the Devils a six-point lead, 13-7, heading into the second quarter.

The Monarchs won the first points of the second quarter, but the Devils kept the score from collapsing as they continued to score and went 50.0-percent from the field and 66.67-percent from the charity strip to help close the half by a score of 32-20.

FDU-Florham found their largest lead of the night when the 4:37 mark came in the third quarter for 18 points, 42-24. The book recorded Tighe with 12 of the 14 points for the Devils in the third. King's was able to close the scoring gap by closing 30 minutes of play with a 46-33 score.

The Devils found themselves with a comfortable score of 56-39 with six minutes to play until the Monarchs went on a 22-5 scoring run to tie the game from the first minute of contest, at 61-61.

With ten seconds remaining, Tighe was fouled and was able to up the score by one point with a free throw. Kings was able to regain control of the ball but turned it over to the Devils and then fouled Gabrielle Walker (Old Bridge, NJ), who sank another two free throws to put the game out of reach in the final seconds, for the 64-61 victory.

FDU-Florham shot 42.9-percent (27-for-63) from the floor, 7.1-percent (1-for-14) from three point range and 69.2-percent (9-for-13) from the free throw line, while King's shot 28.0-percent (7-for-27) from the floor, 85.7-percent (12-for-14) from three point range and 85.7-percent (12-for-14) from the free throw line.

The Devils were able to score 48 points in the paint, 12 points of the fast break and 12 points off of King's turnovers.
 
FDU-Florham will be hosting their first MAC Freedom contest of the season on Saturday January 6, when DeSales visits for a 1pm tip-off.
