Madison, NJ (January 27) – In a thrilling Saturday MAC Freedom matchup, the FDU-Florham Women's basketball team host the King's Monarchs and saw two overtime periods to finish a 94-88 contest, in favor of the Devils.
FDU-Florham (10-8, 3-5 MAC Freedom) squeezed out it's third MAC Freedom win of the season and saw a career high performance from first-year
Neysa Aguilar (Middlesex, NJ) as she dropped 35 points and collected 5 rebounds with 3 assists.
Shannon Tighe (Wayne, NJ) helped the Devils by producing a double-double of 19 points and 16 rebounds.
King's (3-16, 0-8 MAC Freedom) had multiple players in double digit scoring but Brenna Costello recorded 21 points and 8 rebounds for the Monarchs.
FDU-Florham controlled the tip-off and
Gabrielle Walker (Old Bridge, NJ) sank a three-pointer for the first basket of the game, but King's was able to take the lead at the 7:57 timestamp, 6-5. Both teams followed with another pair of baskets, but the Devils were able to go on 13-2 to up the score 20-10 with four minutes remaining.
After pair of three-point field goals for King's, the Monarchs were able close the point differential within one at the 1:48 minute mark, 19-20. The Devils were able to pull ahead and end the first quarter 24-19.
King's was able to start the second quarter with a three-pointer jumper which gave them moment for the score board to read 26-26, three minutes in. The Monarchs were able to pull slightly ahead, but the Devils did not fall to far behind as a step-back jumper from
Aguilar, tied the game at 31-31, with five minutes remaining in the first half.
Both teams were seen trading baskets for the remaining quarter, but it was FDU-Florham who claimed the lead going into the locker room at halftime thanks to a late layup by
Aguilar, 41-40.
Defense was prevalent in the third quarter as the Monarchs were able to score eight points and the Devils scored eleven points. However,
Carla Seyfarth (South Brunswick, NJ) who connected on a late basket gave the Devils a four-point lead to end the third quarter, 52-48.
FDU-Florham controlled the scoreboard for most of the fourth quarter as another three-pointer from
Walker gave the Devils an offensive start. With the score reading 62-60, a Monarch was able to tie the game with a layup in the paint.
The score remained close for the rest of regulation play, until the final second where King's was able to sink a three-pointer to send the game to it's first overtime period.
Almost going basket for basket, each team scored in hope that the other would slip but the score once again was tied with 50 seconds left. FDU-Florham was able to take the lead, 81-78, with two seconds on the clock, but for the second time in the game, King's hit a clutch three-pointer to continue the game into its second overtime.
Ultimately, the Devils were able to find an offensive spurt and outscored the Monarchs, 13-7, in the final five minutes for the 94-88 win.
FDU-Florham shot 38.8-percent (33-for-85) from the floor, 37.5-percent (6-for-16) from three-point range and 71.0-percent (22-for-31) from the free throw line, while King's shot 40.8-percent (31-for-76) from the floor, 45.0-percent (9-for-20) from three point range and 65.4-percent (17-for-26) from the free throw line.
The Devils scored 38 points in the paint, 21 fast break points, and 30 points off of King's turnovers.
FDU-Florham will host Pratt for its last non-conference of the season on Monday, January 29. Tip-off is set for 6pm.
