Hoboken, N.J. (January 20) – Another slow start to the game for the FDU-Florham (3-14, 0-6 MAC Freedom) men's basketball saw them head into halftime with a 17-point deficit against Stevens (13-4, MAC Freedom 4-2). That deficit halted the team as they dropped their conference matchup with the Ducks, 83-66 on Saturday afternoon.
The Devils offense was once again led by
Jaqwan Washington (Bryan, Texas.) who had 18 points followed by
Christopher Smith (Florham Park, N.J.) with 12. Smith also led the Devils in rebounds totaling seven on the night. The Ducks saw three players reach double-digit points. They were led by Stephen Braunstein who notched 25.
FDU started the game off with a good jumper from Washington to take the early 2-0 lead at the 19:25 mark. But this fired up Stevens to go on a 10-point run to take the lead 10-2. The Devils were able to put a stop to this lead as they went on a 9-4 run to attempt to cut Stevens lead that ended at the 13:13 mark. This run was credited to baskets from
Brian Nichols (Roxbury, NJ),
Jamal Santana (Randolph, N.J.), and Smith. However, the Ducks proceeded to extend their lead as they went on another un answered run that put them up 32-16 with six minutes left in the first half. Throughout the rest of the half both teams continuously exchanged buckets and the Devils saw more baskets from
Andrew Piombino Jr. (Rockaway, N.J.)
, Micah Moore (West Orange, N.J.), and
Michael Dabas (Middletown, N.J.) and Washington. However, FDU was unable to catch up to Stevens and went into halftime down 41-24.
The Devils came out in the second half with a good jumper from Washington. But again, Stevens was able to extend their lead with an unanswered run that ended at the 16:30 mark. This lead made the score 55-28. FDU answered right back by going on an 18- 7 run to make the score 62-47 at the 9:45 minute mark. This run included baskets from Washington, Smith,
Ethan Klueh (Orlando, F.L.), and
James Zingaro (Stratford, N.J.). After a pair of made free throws from Piombino and Washington,
Joseph Carney (Garwood, N.J) collected a jumper that was followed by pair of free throws from the Ducks with 3:02 remaining in the game. With both teams ending the half exchanging baskets again, the Devils were unable to catch up to the Ducks. Despite the comeback attempts from Fairleigh Dickinson, they were halted by Stevens 83-66.
As a team, FDU-Florham shot 36 percent (20 of 55) from the floor, 24 percent (4 of 17) from the three-point range, and 79 percent (22 of 28) from the free-throw line. The Devils tallied 28 points in the paint, 19 points off the bench, and 14 fast break points.
Stevens shot 48 percent (30 of 63) from the floor, 25 percent (5 of 20) from the three-point range, and 67 percent (18 of 27) from the free-throw line. They totaled 46 points in the paint, 14 points off the bench, and 19 points off turnovers.
FDU-Florham goes back home on Wednesday, January 24 for their next contest as the Devils play host to MAC Freedom opponent Arcadia for a 7:00 pm tip off.
