Football Comes Up Short Against Stevenson, 24-21

Madison, NJ (September 16)- It was a back-and-forth matchup between the FDU-Florham football team (2-3, 0-2 MAC) and Stevenson (2-1, 1-1 MAC) but ultimately the Devils fell short in their matchup against the Mustangs, 24-21 on Saturday afternoon.

Kwanir Edwards (Trenton, NJ) had himself another impressive outing with 181 all-purpose (85 rushing, 96 receiving) and a touchdown. Ryon Thomas (Mattapoisett, Mass.) posted a career-high 335 yards passing with a touchdown throw on the afternoon. Aidan Clowry (Pawling, NY) posted a career-high 78 receiving yards with a 44-yard touchdown in the matchup.

Defensively, Ginika Ozurumba (Union, NJ) once again led the Devils in tackles with nine total as well as 2.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks. Jimmy Agresta (Totowa, NJ) totaled eight tackles with two of them for loss while Matt Heineman (Staten Island, NY) racked up six tackles and an interception in the matchup.

The Mustangs and the Devils each punted on their first drives. After another Stevenson punt, the FDU offense was able to put together a five play, 59-yard drive. On 2nd and 10 from the Stevenson 44, Thomas threw over the middle to Clowry who caught the ball a few yards shy of the endzone but was
able to drag his defender with him into the endzone to help give the Devils a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

It did not take Stevenson long to answer however as they started with the ball on their own 36, Nayire Wilson hit Pat Gorman for a 22-yard gain and then Louis Clouser found a crease and scampered for a 42-yard touchdown run and tied the ball game 7-7.

The Devils then put together a long drive starting back at their own 18 yard-line. Edwards had a big impact on the drive, catching a dump off and turning it up for 22 yards and then later broke free for a 35-yard run to get the team to the two-yard line. Thomas rolled out to his left on first and goal, tucked the ball and ran in for a two-yard score to retake the advantage in the beginning of the second quarter.

Once again however, the Mustangs did not let the Devils have the lead for very long as an unsportsmanlike penalty had the Devils kicking off from their own 20 and the return by Justin Rutkowski started the drive from the Stevenson 40. On the first play, Louis Clouser hit the edge and went the distance to once again even the score, 14-14.

The game was still tied heading into the second half. The Devils were unsuccessful converting on a fake punt on fourth down that gave the Mustangs the ball at the FDU 35 but on 2nd and 5, were able to get the ball back as Heineman caught his own tip at the line of scrimmage on a pass in his direction.

FDU was not able to turn it into a scoring drive and had to give it back to Stevenson, who then drove into field goal range on a seven-play, 74-yard drive that was finished off by a 25-yard field goal to give Stevenson the 17-14 lead.

After a punt by Fairleigh Dickinson, Stevenson got themselves into field goal range again but missed a 28-yard field goal. Taking advantage of the miss, the Devils put together a 10 play, 80-yard drive. Edwards once again starred on the long drive, picking up runs of six, seven and then took a screen pass 44 yards down to the two-yard line. He was able to cap of the drive with a one-yard touchdown run and retake the lead for FDU, 21-17 with 9:37 left to go in the fourth quarter.

Once again, however, Stevenson was able to score on the drive after Fairleigh Dickinson found points. The Mustangs drove themselves down to the FDU 12. A sack by Ozurumba and Jakob Salinas (Bristol, Conn.) rocked the stadium with life but on the next play, Wilson found Gorman open in the right corner of the endzone to silence the crowd and retake the lead, 24-21.

The FDU offense trotted back out to put together a game-winning drive with 4:29 left to go in the fourth quarter. The Devils picked up some solid gains on the drive but a rollout pass from Thomas to Adrian Reese (Indianapolis, Ind.) was undercut and picked off. The Mustangs were able to run out the rest of the clock and escape with the win.

FDU-Florham looks to bounce back next week as they will seek to find that first MAC win of the season against Albright on Saturday, September 23 with kickoff scheduled for noon.
