Auburndale, Fla. (March 17) – The FDU-Florham baseball team was defeated by UMass-Boston on Friday afternoon on day three of its trip to Florida and the RussMatt Invitational. FDU-Florham fell to 5-6 on the year, while UMass-Boston improved to 6-4 this spring.
Today's game was tight through the first five innings as UMass-Boston held a slim 3-0 edge as the Beacons scored on a passed ball, an RBI triple and a sacrifice fly. UMass-Boston added four runs in the sixth on three FDU-Florham errors and three in the seventh.
FDU-Florham scored its first run in the top of the seventh as
Jimmy Finnerty (Augusta, NJ) crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by
Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.). The Devils rallied for six runs in the top of the eighth on a pair of bases loaded walks, a sacrifice fly, an RBI single by Giovenco and a two run single by
Vincent Ferrigno (Marlboro, NJ).
UMass-Boston got out of the jam and shutdown FDU-Florham in the ninth for the 10-7 win.
Sebastian Alverio (Belleville, NJ) took the loss for the Devils on 2.1 innings, three hits, three runs (two earned) and four walks. Dillon Ryan earned the win for the Beacons on five innings, two hits and seven strikeouts.
FDU-Florham will return to action tomorrow morning with a doubleheader on its final day in Florida. The Devils will play TCNJ at 9:30 am and then Keystone College at 1:15 pm.
