Madison, NJ (February 22) – The FDU-Florham women's lacrosse team opened its 2023 season with a 17-4 setback to Washington College (Md.) on Wednesday evening at Robert T. Shields Field.

FDU-Florham (0-1) used four different goal scorers to account for their four goals on the day, while Washington College (1-0) was guided by a five goal performance from Ellie Morrall.

Washington College scored the first seven goals of the contest before FDU-Florham received back-to-back goals just 32 seconds apart from Claudia Zappia (South Brunswick, NJ) and Emma Ciquera (Putnam County, Conn.) to end play in the opening quarter. Julianna Medina (Linwood, NJ) registered her first collegiate point off an assist on Zappia's goal.

The visitors took a 13-3 lead into the break as Ciquera found Lizzy Escudero (Bridgewater, NJ) for FDU-Florham's lone score in the second. FDU-Florham's goal in the fourth came off an unassisted strike by Marissa Ross (Owings Mills, Md.).

In addition to the five goals from Morrall, Washington College received four goals from both Morgan Southerland and Abby Laubach as well as a trio of goals from Anna Wilson.

The visitors held a 31-12 advantage in shots, a 12-4 edge in ground balls and went a perfect 15-for-15 on the clear. FDU-Florham was successful on six of eight attempts in transition.

In net, Maddy Apap (Montgomery, NJ) and Alison Kozik (Ellington, Conn.) split halves and made five saves apiece for the Devils. Sydney Wingate earned the win for the Shorewomen with two stops in the first half.
