Collegeville, PA (November 28) - The FDU-Florham men's basketball team traveled to Ursinus College on Wednesday where they ultimately lost, 89-72.
The Devils were led by Brian Nichols (Roxbury, NJ
) who registered a total of 14 points, while
Carson Woods (Phoenix, AZ
) tallied 11 points to follow.
Andrew Piombino Jr. (Rockaway, NJ
) led the team defensively, totaling six rebounds on the night. Ursinus had four of their players reach double digit points, being led by Trevor Wall with 20 points.
Ursinus jumped out to a 10-4 lead early before a three pointer from Nichols cut the lead to 10-7 and sparked an 11-2 run for FDU that included baskets from
Christopher Smith (Florham Park, N.J.)
, Michael Morrissey (Pearl River, N.Y), Piombino and a three-point shot from Jack Loucks (Newport Beach, Calif).
The Bears cut the lead to 20-17 at the 10:15 timestamp in the first half, but a three pointer and a successful layup from Jamal Santana (Randolph, N.J.) kept the Devils in the driver seat. They held the advantage until a 29-21 FDU lead to an 15-0 run for Ursinus and they reclaimed the lead 36-29.
James Zingaro (Stratford, NJ)
ended the run with a three-point shot but the Bears closed out the half with three points to take a 39-33 lead into the half. Santana lead the Devils in points with six in the first half.
FDU opened the second half with a successful free throw from Woods off a foul from Marlin Wise of Ursinus, making the score 33-39. However, Ursinus quickly answered back with a six-point run. That run was stopped when Zingaro nailed a lay-up. Ursinus was able to keep momentum though and went on multiple runs throughout the second half. Ultimately, the Bears were able to edge the Devils in the second half and take a greater lead, making the final score 89-72.
As a team, FDU-Florham shot 45.9 percent (28 for 61) from the floor, 34.5 percent (10 for 29) from the three-point range, and 66.7 percent (6 for 9) from the free-throw line. The Devils tallied 34 points in the paint, 31 points off the bench, and 21 points off turnovers.
Ursinus shot 48.3 percent (28 for 58) from the floor, 30.8 percent (8 for 26) from the three-point range, and 83.3 percent (25 for 30) from the free-throw line. They totaled 38 points in the paint, 20 points off the bench, and 27 points off turnovers.
FDU-Florham returns to the court on Friday, November 10th when they compete in the Hilton Scranton Invitational and will square off with the University of Scranton. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
