Wayne, N.J. (November 18) – The fourth-seeded FDU-Florham volleyball team (14-14) was downed in the ECAC Division III Women's Volleyball Tournament Semifinal round to host and top-seeded William Paterson (26-6), 3-0 to close out their 2023 season on Saturday afternoon.
Set 1: The Pioneers got off to a hot start with a 9-0 opening run before an attack error halted it. The Devils scored three of the next four points including a service ace from
Charlotte Fruscione (Mahwah, N.J.) that made the score 11-3. William Paterson dominated down the stretch with a 12-3 run to take a 23-6 lead.
Gabbie Hart (Cherry Hill, N.J.) collected a kill late, but William Paterson took set one, 25-8.
Set 2: It was a back-and-forth set two with kills from Hart,
Jada Everett (Hackensack, N.J.), and Fruscione all notching kills to keep the score to a 5-4 WPU lead. The Pioneers scored four straight that were answered by three straight points from the Devils including a kill from
Rachel Reiter (Riverside, Calif.). Both teams exchanged a trio of points including a kill and a service ace from Reiter and a kill from Hart before William Paterson scored seven straight points to take a 20-10 lead. Hart found another kill late but WPU closed out the second set with five unanswered to capture another set win, 25-11.
Set 3: William Paterson opened with four straight points before the run was ended by a service error and a service ace from
Adrienne DeFuria (Randolph, N.J.) to make the score 4-2 WPU. Fairleigh Dickinson climbed up to a 7-7 tie with kills from Reiter and Fruscione, but William Paterson went on a 7-1 run to make the score 14-8.
Lilli Nawrotzki (Flemington, N.J.), DeFuria and Everett each notched a kill to cut the lead to 14-11 before a 6-1 run gave WPU a 20-12 lead. The Devils scored three of the next four that included a kill from Reiter before the Pioneers solidified the match with four straight points and completed the sweep.
At the conclusion of the tournament,
Charlotte Fruscione was named to the ECAC All-Tournament team for her performance today.
