Madison, NJ (October 14) – The FDU-Florham volleyball team (12-11) traveled to William Paterson University for their final tri-match of the season. They were swept by the Pioneers (16-4) in their first match, 3-0 but were able to rebound in the next matchup against Baruch (6-9), 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Vs. William Paterson
Rachel Reiter (Riverside, Calif.) led the way with six kills, two service aces and a block.
Victoria Carrico (Mountainside, NJ) tallied 18 assists in the match while
Charlotte Fruscione (Mahwah, NJ) posted 12 digs.
Set 1: The two teams exchanged two points before WP scored seven straight to take a 9-2 lead. William Paterson held a 12-4 lead:
Vanessa Freeman (Piscataway, NJ) got a kill before the Pioneers scored four unanswered for a 16-5 edge. FDU was never able to put together any runs of their own and WPU took a 25-10 set one victory.
Set 2: William Paterson came out in set two with six unanswered points and after an attacking error, scored another three to take a 9-1 lead early. It wasn't until a 15-5 WPU lead when FDU started inching themselves back into the set. They went on a 7-3 run that included two kills from and two kills from
Arianna Wood (Wayne, NJ) to cut the lead to 17-11. William Paterson scored a pair of points that was answered by three straight points from Fairleigh Dickinson to make the score 19-14. The Pioneers finished off the set with a 6-2 run to take set two, 25-16.
Set 3: Reiter started off the third set with a kill, but WP scored nine unanswered and took a 9-2 lead after Reiter halted the run with another kill. After a service error, FDU scored four straight points that included two kills from
Lindsay Davis (New Milford, NJ) and a kill from Fruscione that narrowed the advantage to 10-6. The two teams exchanged points up to a 14-9 Pioneer lead where they scored six unanswered to take a 20-9 lead. The Devils wouldn't go down without a fight though. After the two teams exchanged points, FDU went on a 6-1 run to narrow the deficit to 22-16. Each team scored a pair of points before William Paterson put down the final kill to complete the clean sweep.
Vs. Baruch
Reiter once again led the team in kills with 10 in the match while also tallying four blocks.
Adrienne DeFuria (Randolph, NJ) posted a career-high eight service aces to go along with 12 digs. Fruscione led the team in digs with 17 while Carrico led in assists with 18.
Gianna Buscarino (Centereach, NY) also had double-digit digs with 10 in the match.
Set 1: It was a back-and-forth beginning of the first set that had three lead changes up to a 5-4 edge for FDU. After that point, Baruch scored four straight to take an 8-5 lead. Fairleigh Dickinson kept it close up to a 10-9 Baruch lead before a big run of 8-1 gave the Bearcats an 18-10 advantage. Both teams exchanged points up to a 21-13 score before a kill from
Lilli Nawrotzki (Flemington, NJ) sparked three points for the Devils to cut the lead to 21-16. The Bearcats closed out set one with four unanswered to take the 25-16 victory.
Set 2: Fairleigh Dickinson came out firing in the second set where they jumped out to a 14-1 lead. The run included three service aces from DeFuria, a service ace from Carrico and a kill from Fruscione. The Bearcats scored six straight to cut into the lead before a kill from Reiter halted their run and made the score, 15-6 Devils. It was a back-and-forth battle down the stretch and eventually ended with a Fruscione kill that tied the match for FDU with a 25-17 set two win.
Set 3: The Devils jumped out to a 5-2 lead with the help of kills from Reiter, Davis and Fruscione before three unanswered from the Bearcats tied the contest, 5-5. Baruch took a 7-6 lead before five unanswered gave FDU the advantage back, 11-6. The Bearcats came within a point at the 14-13 mark before the Devils pulled away with six straight points for a 20-13 advantage. The two teams exchanged points up to a 23-15 FDU lead. Baruch scored three points before two attack errors closed out the set for Fairleigh Dickinson, 25-18 and gave FDU the 2-1 set advantage.
Set 4: FDU saw kills from DeFuria,
Jada Everett (Hackensack, NJ) and Reiter up to a 4-0 lead before Baruch scored their first point. Both teams fought back-and-forth up to an 11-7 lead before Fairleigh Dickinson scored five unanswered points to take a 16-7 edge, Baruch scored two but FDU doubled it for a 20-8 advantage. The Bearcats cut the lead to 20-12 with four straight points but the Devils followed up with five straight that included three service aces from DeFuria for a 25-12 set four win that sealed the match for FDU-Florham and kept them above .500 on the season.
FDU-Florham is on the road again, this time for MAC Freedom action as they travel to Glenside, Pa. for a matchup with Arcadia on Wednesday, October 18 with match time scheduled for 7:00 pm.
