Game Recap: Football |

Football Shut Out by Nationally Ranked Delaware Valley, 20-0

Madison, NJ (October 14)- The FDU-Florham football team (2-4, 1-4 MAC) returned home to Robert T. Shields Field for their second home game of the season but were shut out against American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and D3football.com nationally ranked Delaware Valley (5-1, 4-0 MAC), 20-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Defensively, the Devils saw three players hit double-digit tackles on the day. Matt Heineman (Staten Island, NY) led on the day with 11 total tackles while having 1.5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. Ginika Ozurumba (Union, NJ) and Christian Puntolillo (Wayne, NJ) each had ten tackles. Ozurumba led the Devils in tackles for loss with 2.5 while Puntolillo also added a pass breakup to his stat sheet.  Willie Garner (Brick, NJ) notched 2.5 tackles for loss with 1.5 sacks on the day while collected eight total tackles with 0.5 sacks.

Offensively, Kwanir Edwards netted 86 yards on 20 carries and caught two passes for four yards. Ryon Thomas (Mattapoisett, Mass.) was 9-for-18 for 73 yards and an interception on the afternoon. Aidan Clowry (Pawling, NY) caught two passes for 42 yards while Anthony Bilotta (Cedar Grove, NJ) hauled in three passes for 18 yards.

The Aggies got the ball first and drove right down the field on the Devils defense for the first touchdown of the day. The nine-play, 66-yard drive was capped off by Jack Fallon on a two-yard touchdown run. The extra point was missed so Delaware Valley started off the game up 6-0.

The first drive for FDU did not start they way they wanted. An incomplete pass to Lomorris House (Bridgeport, Conn.) and a one yard run by Edwards forced the Devils to throw on third down and a pass from Thomas bounced off a receiver and into the hands of DVU's Anthony Puntolillo, who collected the interception and gave Delaware Valley good field possession.

The Aggies once again put the ball in the endzone on a four play 30-yard touchdown drive that was finished off by quarterback Louie Barrios IV who used his legs for a four-yard score. A successful extra point this time gave the Aggies a 13-0 lead.

Fairleigh Dickinson put together a good second drive. The drive started on their own 28. A 15-yard Edwards run and a facemask penalty a few plays later moved the ball into field goal range for the Devils. Coach Anthony Van Curen eventually had to send out the field goal on 4th and 11 from the DVU 40-yard line. Chris Maida (Red Bank, NJ) attempted a 46-yard field goal but was just shy from hitting a career-long and the ball went back to the Aggies.

After several drives that ended in punts, the Aggies got the ball back in the second quarter at the 12:28 timestamp and took a five-play, 40-yard drive to the house to extend their lead to 20-0. It was Jack Fallon again who found the endzone, this time from three yards out. Towards the end of the first half,
The Aggies put together the best chance to score, but Barrios lost control of a wet ball on a QB scramble on the FDU nine that was recovered by Heineman. Thomas kneeled it out on the next play to end the half.

Both defenses were stout in the second half as no team was able to score which helped the Aggies secure the Middle Atlantic Conference win and keep them perfect in the league this season. The best chance FDU had to score in the contest came in the third quarter when a fumbled snap on a punt gave the Devils the ball on the Aggies 11-yard line but they were unable to capitalize on the excellent field possession.

FDU-Florham hosts Alvernia next week for Family Weekend on Saturday, October 21 with kickoff scheduled for noon.
