Wilkes-Barre,
PA (September 13) – The FDU-Florham volleyball team outlasted MAC Freedom opponent Wilkes in five sets, with set scores of 14-25, 25-21, 20-25, 26-24, and 15-11. The Devils improved its record to 2-3 and 1-1 in the MAC Freedom while Wilkes fell to 1-5 and 0-2 in MAC Freedom competition.
FDU was led by junior outside hitter
Adrienne DeFuria (Randolph, NJ), who posted a team-high 18 kills as well as 19 digs. Senior outside hitter
Charlotte Fruscione (Mahwah, NJ) contributed 13 kills and a team-high 29 digs while graduate student setter
Kacie Ros (Bridgewater, NJ) set up 52 assists and posted 16 digs. All these efforts were season-highs totals.
Set 1: The Devils and the Colonels went toe-to-toe in the first points of the set until Wilkes put together 10 straight points after a 3-3 start that made it hard for FDU to rally from and eventually took the 1-0 lead.
Set 2: The Colonels tried to pull away from the Devils on several occasions, but the Devils fought back each time, rallying to tie the contest after being down 8-4 and then taking a 20-18 advantage after falling behind, 18-14. FDU held on to the lead for the rest of the frame and closed it out on a Wilkes attack error to tie the contest, 1-1.
Set 3: Wilkes saw bigger flurries of points throughout the set, taking 4-0, 13-8 and 19-11 advantages. FDU was not able to rally back and fell behind 2-1 in the match. Wilkes saw a team hitting percentage of .205 and a game-high 15 kills as a team in the set.
Set 4: Both teams were neck-and-neck throughout the set with no team seeing more than a three-point difference to each other. The set eventually went to extra points with a score of 24-24, but the Devils took two straight points on attack errors to send the match to a fifth set.
Set 5: The set saw multiple lead changes up to a 6-6 tie until the Devils saw three straight points to make it 9-6 and never relinquished the lead and the contest was closed out on a kill by sophomore middle blocker
Rachel Reiter (Riverside, Calif) to give the Devils the win.
FDU returns to the Ferguson Recreation Center Thursday, September 15, at 7:00 pm for a matchup with Old Westbury.
FDU-Florham is currently running a campaign in honor of former Devils men's basketball head coach, men's golf coach and athletic director Roger Kindel.
