Madison, NJ (April 9) – The FDU-Florham baseball team fell twice to Misericordia University this afternoon to round out the three game Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) set between the Devils and the Cougars.
FDU-Florham moved to 15-10 overall and 6-6 in league play after getting swept by Misericordia. The Cougars improved to 18-10 overall and 8-4 in the MAC Freedom.
Game One: Misericordia 10, FDU 4
The Devils held Misericordia to just one run through four innings of play before the Cougars exploded for nine runs over the final three frames. FDU starter
Christian Capuano (Vernon, NJ) allowed a sacrifice fly in the top of the first and held the Cougars to just that run until the top of the fifth.
The Cougars played small ball to score two of its three runs in the fifth inning after putting runners on with back-to-back hits. The Devils immediately cut their deficit in half with RBI singles by both
DJ Gonnelli (Berkeley Heights, NJ) and
Tommy Moore (Mansfield, NJ).
Misericordia posted a pair of RBI singles in the sixth before Brady Madden hit a two run shot for an 8-2 lead. Both teams scored twice in the seventh to account for the 10-4 game one final.
Moore went 4-for-4 with two RBI in the opener to lead FDU's offense. Capuano (3-2) got the start and went five innings for the Devils allowing seven hits and four earned runs to go along with one strikeout.
Game Two: Misericordia 7, FDU 3
After two scoreless innings, Misericordia put up a four spot in the top of the third. Madden singled home a run, Austin Miles plated Madden and Santino Manganell worked a bases loaded walk before a sacrifice fly made it 4-0.
The Devils took advantage of an error as
Sean Wodell (Freehold, NJ) scored FDU's opening run of the game in the bottom of the third. Back-to-back doubles by
Tyler McCulloch (Berkeley Heights, NJ) and
Matt Nodoro (Morristown, NJ) cut FDU's deficit in half, 4-2, midway through the nightcap and a sacrifice fly by Gonnelli in the fifth made it a one run game.
Three straight singles and a bases clearing RBI triple put the game out of reach in the top of the sixth as the Cougars pitchers set the Devils down 1-2-3 in the sixth in the seventh to secure the sweep.
Nodoro and
Dylan Hode (Manalapan, NJ) both tallied two hits for the Devils in game two. In yesterday's series opener, Nodoro broke the career record for walks and 87 with the team.
Gonnelli (2-3) took the loss on four hits, four runs and five walks in three innings.
FDU will play five games next week beginning with a non-conference game against Stockton University on Tuesday, April 12 at 3:30 pm.
