Softball Swept By Misericordia in Regular Season Finale

Dallas, Pa. (April 30) – The FDU-Florham softball team fell twice in its regular season finale this afternoon as Misericordia University defeated the Devils by scores of 2-1 and 8-4 in MAC Freedom action.

The Devils finish the regular season with an overall record of 12-14 and a mark of 8-8 in league play, while Misericordia improved to 26-7 and to 15-1 in the MAC Freedom standings. FDU will be the fifth seed in the upcoming MAC Freedom Tournament, while Misericordia will be the top seed.

Game One: Misericordia 2, FDU 1

The opener was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning as only one runner between the two teams over the first four and a half frames reached third base. After the Devils got the first out of the fifth, a single by N. Elliot and an RBI double by M. Bohn gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead. A single through the left side by B. Holder plated L. Garrett, who ran for Bohn for the 2-0 edge.

The Devils tried to rally in the top of the seventh and got their first run of the game when leadoff hitter Rachel Reiter (Riverside, Calif.) blasted a home run to center. Colleen Conway (Amityville, NY), the very next batter, singled to center and was pinch run for by Anna Gibbons (East Northport, NY). Gibbons advanced to second on a passed ball and to third on an error, but Alexa McHugh struck out the final batter of the game as the Cougars held off the Devils for a 2-1 win.

Ciara Hoffman (Freehold, NJ) took the loss (8-9) but pitched a great game as she scattered six hits, allowed two earned runs and struck out four. McHugh earned the win on seven innings, five hits, one run and nine strikeouts.

Game Two: Misericordia 8, FDU 4

Misericordia scored three times in the third and five times in the fourth before the Devils could score their runs. The Cougars scored their runs in the third on a two run single and sacrifice fly and then used a two run double, a two run single and a fielder's choice for their runs in the fourth.

Reiter's bat stayed hot in game two as she drove in both Kristen Tigar (Hazlet, NJ) and Heather Priante (Howell, NJ) on a double. An RBI single by Conway plated Reiter and a single up the middle by Morgan DeLoreto (Denville, NJ) plated Conway to account for FDU's four run, fifth inning.

Misericordia's Emily Wenner allowed just one FDU batter to reach base over the final two innings as the Cougars completed the sweep with an 8-4 win in the nightcap.

Bianca DiSanto (Colonia, NJ) took the loss (4-4) on six innings, eight hits, eight runs (seven earned) and two strikeouts.

FDU will face fourth-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology in the opening game of the MAC Freedom Tournament on Thursday, May 5 at 10:00 am on the campus of King's College (Pa.).
