Madison, NJ (April 26) – Powered by a season-high eight goals from sophomore
Katie Walsh (Marlton, NJ) and a career-high 12 saves by
Jamie Kubach (Philadelphia, Pa.), the FDU-Florham women's lacrosse team defeated Moravian University, 20-10, in a non-conference matchup on Robert T. Shields Field tonight.
FDU-Florham, which received votes in this week's IWLCA NCAA Division III national poll, improved to 13-2, while Moravian evened out its record to 8-8 on the year.
In addition to her eight goals, Walsh registered three ground balls, three caused turnovers, nine draw controls and went 3-for-4 on free position shots.
Lizzy Escudero (Bridgewater, NJ) and
Alexis Ashton (Blairstown, NJ) both potted hat tricks in the 20-10 victory. Moravian was led by Lindsey Strohl, who notched four goals on the night for the visitors.
Tied at 2-2 after three minutes of play, FDU scored five straight goals for a 7-2 edge prior to the first quarter horn rang. Walsh registered a hat trick over the course of the run, while Ashton and
Emma Ciquera (Putnam County, Conn.) both added single goals.
Moravian answered with for straight of its own, including one on the man advantage to cut its deficit to just one at 7-6 with 5:24 to play in the half. FDU ended the first half and opened the second half with a 10-2 run that extended the Devils lead to nine at 17-8 early in the fourth. Down the stretch, FDU received goals from Walsh, Ashton and Escudero to account for the 20-10 final.
As a team, FDU outshot Moravian 36-27, held a 12-10 edge in ground balls, won 24-of-34 draw controls and went 16-for-21 on clearing attempts. The visitors went a perfect 17-for-17 in transition.
Kubach improved to 10-2 on the season with a career-high 12 saves in net for the Devils, while Brelyn Friedman stopped the ball ten times for Moravian in the setback.
FDU will return to action tomorrow afternoon with a 4:00 pm home game against MAC Freedom opponent Delaware Valley University on Robert T. Shields Field.
