Baseball Splits With #6/#9 Arcadia; Defeats Nationally-Ranked Team for First Time Since 2016

Madison, NJ (April 23) – The FDU-Florham baseball team split its MAC Freedom doubleheader against #6/#9 Arcadia University this afternoon at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark. The Knights took game one, 3-1, before the Devils earned the split with a 3-2 in in the nightcap.

With today's win, the Devils earned their first victory over a nationally-ranked program since March 30, 2016 when FDU defeated Rutgers-Camden, 5-1, who was ranked No. 10 by D3baseball.com at the time.

The Devils, who are now 18-16 overall and 8-10 in MAC Freedom play, are going to need to sweep Stevens Institute of Technology next weekend to secure a berth to the MAC Freedom playoffs.

Game One: Arcadia 3, FDU 1

FDU struck first in the bottom of the third inning when Tyrus Chippendale (Middlesex, NJ) plated Dylan Hode (Manalapan, NJ) on a single up the middle. Hode reached with a one out double to left. Arcadia answered with a triple and an RBI single by Connor Cheeseman to tie the game at 1-1 in the fourth.

The Devils had runners on second and third after a single, a walk and a double steal, but a pitching change by Arcadia proved to be the right move as Owen Margolis struck out the side.

After a scoreless sixth, Matt Donchez began the seventh with a solo home run and then scored an insurance run on a single by Alex Madera. Margolis returned to the mound for the seventh and secured the game one win for the Knights.

Christian Capuano (Vernon, NJ) took the loss (4-3) on seven innings, nine hits, three earned runs and seven strikeouts. Margolis (8-0) earned the win in 2.2 innings of relief that featured six strikeouts.

Game Two: FDU 3, Arcadia 2

Arcadia scored one in the top of the first before an RBI single up the middle by Tyler McCulloch (Berkeley Heights, NJ) plated Chippendale, who reached on a double to lead off the frame, to make the score 1-1.

The Devils added one in the second on an RBI double by Chippendale and one in the third in a home run by Matt Nodoro (Morristown, NJ) for a 3-1 edge through three. FDU starter Joseph Kastner (Springfield, NJ) shut the Knights down in each inning and was able to work out of jams in both the sixth (runners on second and third) and the seventh (runner on second) for the win.

Arcadia was able to score one in the seventh, but a hard hit ball back to Kastner ended the game with the Devils ahead, 3-2. Kastner (5-1) pitched seven complete innings and allowed two earned runs in the win. Nick Fossile took the loss on two innings, two runs and two walks.

FDU will host Saint Elizabeth University in non-conference action on Wednesday, April 27 at 4:00 pm.
