Softball Splits Senior Day Doubleheader with Wilkes

Madison, NJ (April 2) – The FDU-Florham softball team split its MAC Freedom doubleheader this afternoon on McManus Field against Wilkes University. The Devils took game one, 5-4, but fell in the nightcap, 4-1.

Prior to the start of today's opener, the Devils honored their four seniors including Dana Giardina (New Fairfield, Conn.), Colleen Conway (Amityville, NY), Ciara Hoffman (Freehold, NJ) and Morgan DeLoreto (Denville, NJ).

Game One: FDU 5, Wilkes 4

FDU-Florham (7-7, 3-3 MAC Freedom) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by DeLoreto, an RBI single by Giardina and an RBI double by Kacie Centineo (Waldwick, NJ). The Devils added a fourth run in the bottom of the fifth as Conway launched an opposite field home run to open the inning, her first of the season.

Both teams traded runs in the sixth before Wilkes rallied for three in the top of the seventh. The Colonels took advantage of a couple of miscues by FDU, but with two outs and runners on second and third, Hoffman struck out the final batter of the game to secure the 5-4 victory.

At the top of the lineup, Kristen Tigar (Hazlet, NJ) went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI for the Devils. Hoffman took the win (5-4) on nine hits, four runs (two earned) and five strikeouts in seven innings.

Game Two: Wilkes 4, FDU 1

Wilkes used an RBI single in the third, an RBI single in the fifth and a two run double in the sixth for a 4-0 advantage through six innings. The Devils were held off the board until the bottom of the seventh when Tigar plated Kristina Pelano (Howell, NJ) on an RBI single, but Wilkes secured the split with a 4-1 win in game two.

Wilkes starter H. Mullins held the Devils to just three hits and one run in seven innings. Bianca DiSanto (Colonia, NJ) took the loss on nine hits, four runs and a strikeout in seven frames in the circle.

FDU will host St. Joseph's Brooklyn on Thursday, April 7 at 3:00 pm in a non-conference twin bill on McManus Field.
