Center Valley, Pa. (April 16) – FDU-Florham baseball first-year
Colby Craig (Chester, NJ) became the first student-athlete to record eight saves in a single season as the Devils split their MAC Freedom doubleheader with DeSales University by scores of 6-3 and 3-4.
FDU-Florham is now 17-12 overall on the season and 7-7 in MAC Freedom play, while DeSales moved to 14-13 and 8-6 in league games.
Jimmy Finnerty (Augusta, NJ) accounted for five RBI on the day, while
Dylan Hode (Manalapan, NJ) picked up two RBI of his own in the doubleheader.
Game One: FDU 6, DeSales 3
Hode gave the Devils an early 2-0 lead with a single to right center that plated
Tyler McCulloch (Berkeley Heights, NJ) and Finnerty in the top of the second. Then in the third with the bases loaded, McCulloch plated
Tyrus Chippendale (Middlesex, NJ), and Finnerty drove in a pair with a double to left center to extend their lead to 5-1.
A pair of doubles and an infield single by DeSales in the bottom of the third cut its deficit to two at 5-3 before
Tommy Moore (Mansfield, NJ) registered his 11th home run of the season to push FDU's lead out to three in the fifth.
DeSales loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth on a single, walk and hit by pitch, but FDU starter
Christian Capuano (Vernon, NJ), who pitched six innings in his start, worked out of the jam without conceding a run.
Craig came on in the ninth and allowed runners to reach second and third, but struck out the side to secure the win and to secure his eighth save of the year. Craig's eight save not only breaks the single season school record, but ranks him second in all of Division III baseball this year.
Capuano earned the win (4-2) as he allowed 11 hits, three runs (one earned) and struck out six in six innings.
Game Two: DeSales 4, FDU 3
Finnerty gave FDU a 3-0 lead right out of the gate as he blasted a three run homer over the fence in left in the top of the first.
FDU starter
Anthony Molina (Bound Brook, NJ) pitched a gem as he scattered five hits and surrendered only one run in five innings and
Jonathan Rodenhaver (Port Republic, Md.) pitched a perfect sixth inning.
The Bulldogs trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh and took advantage of two fielding miscues by the Devils. A single and an error led to a two run game tying triple by Trevor Learner. Then, Robert Lamm, who up to that point had the only RBI of the game on a solo homer in the fourth, lifted the ball to deep enough to right field, allowing Learner to score the game winning run.
FDU and DeSales will travel to Madison, NJ on Monday afternoon to complete the three game series at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark at 3:30 pm.
