Madison, NJ (April 13) – Powered by five goal and two assists from
Kylee Garcia (Branchburg, NJ) as well as four goals and four assists from
Lizzy Escudero (Bridgewater, NJ), the FDU-Florham women's lacrosse team took over sole possession of first place in the MAC Freedom with a 23-13 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology tonight on Robert T. Shields Field.
FDU-Florham (10-2, 4-0 MAC Freedom) also received a huge effort from
Katie Walsh (Marlton, NJ) as she tallied four goals and one assist for five points to go along with six ground balls, six caused turnovers and eight draw controls.
Stevens (12-2, 4-1 MAC Freedom) was led by Camryn Rogers and Zoe Cook, who both tallied three goals apiece. Defensively, Maddie Schmidt posted three ground balls and caused three turnovers for the Ducks.
Walsh and
Jenna Ranney (Forest Hill, Md.) scored back-to-back goals to open the game before Schmidt got the Ducks on the board for a 2-1 score just 2:01 into the contest. The Devils went on an 8-2 scoring run to balloon their lead to 10-3 midway through the second. FDU spread out its offense during the run as six different student-athletes accounted for the eight goals.
Stevens scored four times in the second quarter, but trailed FDU by a 14-7 margin at the break. Midway through the third with the Devils up by just five at 15-10, FDU scored five straight and eight of the final 11 goals of the game to account for the 23-13 final.
As a team, FDU outshot Stevens by a 42-26 margin and went 19-for-22 on the clear. The Devils also held a 20-15 advantage in ground balls and won 22 of the 39 draw controls in the game.
In net,
Jamie Kubach (Philadelphia, Pa.) registered four saves for the Devils and picked up her eighth win of the season in a complete game effort. Lauren Cunniff stopped the ball ten times for the visitors.
The Devils will play four of their final five games of the regular season on the road beginning next weekend with a trip to MAC Freedom rival Arcadia University on Wednesday, April 20 at 7:00 pm.
