Baseball Rallies for 6-5 MAC Freedom Win Over Wilkes

Madison, NJ (April 1) – The FDU-Florham baseball team rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth and first-year Colby Craig (Chester, NJ) recorded his sixth save of the season as the Devils topped Wilkes University, 6-5, in the first game of a three game Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) series this afternoon at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark.

FDU-Florham, now 15-5 overall and 6-1 in MAC Freedom play, posted six runs on 13 hits including a pair of solo home runs by Tommy Moore (Mansfield, NJ) and Jimmy Finnerty (Augusta, NJ). Wilkes fell to 11-8 and 0-7 in the league today and took its fifth conference loss by just one run this year.

An RBI double by DJ Gonnelli (Berkeley Heights, NJ) and a homer to dead center by Moore gave the Devils a 2-0 lead after one. In the second, Chris Kubas (New Providence, NJ) doubled, moved to third and scored on a bunt by Dylan Hode (Manalapan, NJ) for a 3-0 edge.

Wilkes put together a pair of runs in the fourth, before Finnerty hit a towering fly ball to right field that landed over the fence for FDU's fourth run of the day, and his second homer of the season. After today's two homer performance, the Devils rank 13th in the nation with 18 on the year. Moore individually ranks fourth in Division III with eight homers and has the third most career home runs in program history with 17, tying the mark of Matt Oliveto '11. Moore is also one home run shy of tying his own single season school record that he set last season.

The Colonels knotted the game up at 4-4 with a solo home run of their own and an RBI double by Max Alessi and then took their first lead in the seventh with an RBI double by N. Pronti, who played D. Bayo all the way from first base.

FDU came to the plate in the bottom of the eighth trailing 5-4. Tyler McCulloch (Berkeley Heights, NJ) began the frame with a ground rule double, moved to third on a single by Kubas and scored on an RBI single by Vincent Ferrigno (Marlboro, NJ). After Wilkes made a pitching change and with runners on first and third, Hode dropped a bunt allowing pinch runner Mark Geist (Middlesex, NJ) to score the go ahead run.

The Colonels had the tying and go ahead runs on base in the ninth, but Chase Glasspoole (Pine Bush, NY) made a great catch in left and Craig got back to back outs to close the game for the Devils. Craig's save was his sixth of the season, the second most in a single year in FDU history, and gives him the second most in Division III baseball this year.

FDU starter Joseph Kastner (Springfield, NJ) didn't get a decision in the start today but pitched six innings, allowed eight hits and four runs in addition to five strikeouts. Sean Wodell (Freehold, NJ) picked up his first win of the year in two innings of relief before Craig came on for the save.

FDU and Wilkes will head to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. to complete its three game MAC Freedom set tomorrow afternoon beginning at 12:00 pm.
