Baseball Holds Off Late Rally By Rutgers-Newark

Madison, NJ (March 8) – The FDU-Florham baseball team defeated Rutgers-Newark University, 9-6, this afternoon at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark and are off to their best start since the 2010 season.
 
FDU raced out to an 8-0 lead over the first four innings of the game. Matt Nodoro (Morristown, NJ) ripped a three run tank to left for his first homer of the season in the second and Tommy Moore (Mansfield, NJ) registered his third home run of the year in the third inning, which came as a solo shot to left for the 4-0 lead.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, FDU used a pair of two run doubles by Tyrus Chippendale (Middlesex, NJ) and Mark Geist (Middlesex, NJ) to account for the 8-0 score.
 
Rutgers-Newark answered with four runs of its own in the top of the fifth cutting FDU's lead in half, 8-4, midway through today's game. With two outs in the fifth, Ryan Lebow plated Eric Recchia on an RBI single before Robert Gonzalez cleared the bases with a three run double. Recchia homered in the top of the seventh, while Matthew Rypkema posted an RBI single to make the score 8-6 in the top of the eighth.
 
FDU closer Colby Craig (Chester, NJ) came out of the pen with one out and the bases loaded in the top of the eighth. He struck out the side in the eighth and set Rutgers-Newark 1-2-3 in the ninth to secure a five out save and a 9-6 win for the Devils.
 
Four Devils notched two hits apiece today including Chippendale, Geist, Nodoro and Vincent Ferrigno (Marlboro, NJ). Chippendale went 2-for-5 with two RBI, Geist went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Nodoro went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI and Ferrigno went 2-for-3 with two runs.

Eli Gonzalez (Brooklyn, NY) picked up the win in relief (1-0) as he pitched 2.1 innings and allowed one run and two hits to go along with two strikeouts. Craig earned his third save of the year as he retired all five batters he faced and struck out two.
 
Colin Thomson took the loss (1-1) as he surrendered all eight runs and eight hits over the first four innings of today's game for the visitors.
 
FDU will travel south for a pair of games with No. 11 Johns Hopkins University this weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm on Saturday, March 12 and 12:00 pm on Sunday, March 13.
