Fredericksburg, Va. (March 14) – The FDU-Florham baseball team was edged by the University of Mary Washington, 7-6, in walk off fashion this afternoon on the road.
FDU-Florham (7-3) rallied from a four run deficit and evened the score at 6-6 heading to the bottom of the ninth, but Mary Washington (10-5) used a single up the middle by Burke Steifman to end the game with the hosts winning it by a 7-6 final.
Mary Washington struck first in the bottom of the opening inning before FDU answered with two in the top of the second on an RBI single by
Dylan Hode (Manalapan, NJ) and a sacrifice fly by
Tyrus Chippendale (Middlesex, NJ). A homer by Mary Washington's Noah Roots over the fence in right in the bottom of the third knotted the game up at 2-2.
The hosts scored twice in the fifth and twice in the seventh for a 6-2 advantage before FDU answered late in the contest. Hode knocked in
Matt Nodoro (Morristown, NJ) in the top of the eight for FDU's third run.
The Devils were patient at the plate in the top of the ninth and with the bases loaded after three straight walks,
Vincent Ferrigno (Marlboro, NJ) earned an RBI with a walk of his own. An infield single paired with an error by Mary Washington evened the score at 6-6 heading into the bottom of the final inning.
Chris Rubano began the bottom of the ninth with a double down the right field line and moved to third on a passed ball. Steifman singled up the middle and walked it off for the host Eagles, 7-6.
FDU starter
Christian Capuano (Vernon, NJ) pitched four innings, allowed two earned runs to go along with four hits and two strikeouts.
Colby Craig (Chester, NJ) shouldered the loss (1-1) in the ninth for the Devils. Mary Washington started Ty Lowe pitched seven strong, allowed six hits and two earned runs and punched out five. Erik Parnell earned the win (2-0) for the Eagles.
Hode went 3-for-4 with two RBI from the nine hole for the Devils, while pinch hitter
Sean Wodell (Freehold, NJ) posted two hits and two RBI of his own. Nodoro scored three of FDU's six runs on the day.
FDU will open Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play against Delaware Valley University on Friday, March 18. The Devils will host the Aggies in a single game on Friday at 3:30 pm before both teams travel to Doylestown, Pa. for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
