Madison, NJ (March 5) – The FDU-Florham baseball team improved to 6-2 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of Rutgers-Camden this afternoon at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark.
The Devils used four home runs to get past the Scarlet Raptors, 9-4, in the opener and then rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning of game two to secure the win, 3-2, and the two-game sweep.
Game 1:
Tommy Moore (Mansfield, NJ) immediately gave the Devils a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with his second homer of the season. After Rutgers-Camden knotted the score up at 1-1 in the second, Moore came to the plate in the bottom of the third and plated
Dylan Hode (Manalapan, NJ) with an RBI sinlge after Hode began the frame with a walk.
The game entered the bottom of the fifth with the score tied at 3-3.
Chris Kubas (New Providence, NJ) quickly put FDU back in front as he blasted a two-run homer, his first of the year, for the 5-3 edge. Kubas' homer forced a pitching change and the next two batters reached base safely.
Tyler McCulloch (Berkeley Heights, NJ) quickly cleared them with a three-run home run of his own, extending FDU's lead to 8-3.
Kubas belted his second homer of the game in the bottom of the sixth and despite allowing a solo shot in the top of the seventh,
Michael Dunay (Stockholm, NJ) shutdown Rutgers-Camden for the 9-4 victory.
Kubas went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI in the opener, while Moore went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI and McCulloch went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI for the Devils. FDU starter
Christian Capuano (Vernon, NJ) didn't get a decision but pitched three innings, scattered three hits and allowed an unearned run.
DJ Gonnelli (Berkeley Heights, NJ) earned the win (1-1) and tossed three frames in the opener.
Game 2:
The nightcap featured a pitcher's duel between
Joseph Kastner (Springfield, NJ) of FDU and John Kasper of Rutgers-Camden as through three innings only one combined hit was surrendered by both pitchers. The Raptors came to the plate in the top of the fourth a scored twice as Jesse Gerdes led off with a walk and was quickly brought around on a two-run homer by Jack Murphy.
A single, paired with an error by the Raptors outfield allowed FDU to cut its deficit in half and Kastner kept the Devils in the game with shutdown innings in the top of the fifth and top of the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth, an RBI single by
Matt Nodoro (Morristown, NJ) and an RBI single by Hode gave FDU a 3-2 edge. Closer
Colby Craig (Chester, NJ) came on in the top of the seventh and shutdown the visitors 1-2-3 for the 3-2 win and the two game sweep.
Kastner (2-0) pitched six innings, scattered three hits, allowed two runs and struck out five for the Devils, while Kasper (1-1) took the loss on 5.2 innings, eight hits, three runs and five strike outs.
FDU will return to the field on Tuesday, March 8 with a non-conference game with Rutgers-Newark at 3:00 pm.
