Softball Falls Twice to King's in MAC Freedom Play

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. (March 26) – The FDU-Florham softball team fell twice to King's College (Pa.) in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play this afternoon on the road. The Monarchs took game one 5-2 and the nightcap, 9-8.

FDU-Florham is now 6-6 overall and 2-2 in MAC Freedom play, while King's moved to 8-5 and 2-2 in conference games.

Game One: King's 5, FDU 2

The Devils struck for two runs in the top of the first inning as an RBI triple by Colleen Conway (Amityville, NY) plated Kristen Tigar (Hazlet, NJ) for the 1-0 edge before Conway scored on a wild pitch. FDU had at least one hit in every inning, but couldn't score another run for the remainder of the game.

King's answered with one in the first and one in the second to tie the game at 2-2. An RBI double to left center gave the Monarch a 3-2 edge in the fifth and the hosts added two more in the fifth on a two run single to center to account for the 5-2 final.

Eight of the nine starters for FDU in the opener posted at least one hit. Brandi McIntosh earned the win (4-2) for King's as she scattered nine hits, allowed two earned runs and struck out five in seven innings. Ciara Hoffman (Freehold, NJ) took the loss (4-4) on ten hits, four earned runs and two strikeouts in six innings in the circle.

Game Two: King's 9, FDU 8 (Six Innings)

As they did in the opener, FDU struck for two runs in the first inning. After Tigar walked and Heather Priante (Howell, NJ) reached on an error, both scored on a single up the middle by Morgan DeLoreto (Denville, NJ).

Conway worked a bases loaded walk and a King's error put FDU up 4-0 through an inning and a half. King's got its first run in the bottom of the second on a homer by Molly Gillette.

The Monarchs put a five spot on the board in the bottom of the fifth and took the lead for good at 9-5. FDU, however, put two runners on in the top of the sixth and nearly tied the game. Abigail Wittig (Andover, NJ) walked and Tigar singled to open the inning and both crossed the plate.

Dana Giardina (New Fairfield, Conn.) reached on a fielder's choice allowing Conway to score FDU's eighth run but King's pitcher Emily Novicki got out of the jam and the game was called due to darkness with the score at 9-8 in favor of the hosts.

Bianca DiSanto (Colonia, NJ) took the loss (2-2) on seven hits and eight earned runs in 4.2 innings, while Novicki took the win (3-1) on seven hits, eight runs (six earned) and two strikeouts in six innings.

The Devils will travel to Ramapo College on Tuesday, March 29 for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
