Capuano Earns 100th Career Strikeout; Devils Split MAC Freedom Games With King's

Madison, NJ (March 26) – The FDU-Florham baseball team split its Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC) doubleheader with King's College (Pa.) this afternoon at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark. The Devils walked off in the opener, but fell in the nightcap by a 13-6 final.

FDU is now 13-5 on the year and 5-1 in the MAC Freedom, while King's sits at 7-8 and 1-5 in league play.

Game One: FDU 4, King's 3 (Nine Innings)

FDU starter Christian Capuano (Vernon, NJ) struck out six batters his first time through the order and recorded the 100th punchout of his career in the opening inning. The Devils helped their starter out in the bottom of the second when DJ Gonnelli (Berkeley Heights, NJ) blasted his first homer of the season 380 feet over the fence in left center.

King's got one back in the top of the third on a pair of fielding miscues by the Devils.

In the bottom of the sixth, a single by Chris Kubas (New Providence, NJ) and a double by Tommy Moore (Mansfield, NJ) put two in scoring position before Matt Nodoro (Morristown, NJ) plated Kubas on a sacrifice fly for FDU's third run of the game.

The visitors scored twice in the top of the seventh tying the game at 3-3. The Monarchs second run came on a groundout with runners on second and third following a single by Brandon Loner and a double by Chase Yocum. A pinch hit RBI double by Stewart Caladie knotted the game at three.

In the top of the ninth, King's had the go ahead run on third, but Colby Craig (Chester, NJ) got out of the jam giving FDU a chance to walk it off in the bottom of the frame. Vincent Ferrigno (Marlboro, NJ) was hit by a pitch as the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the ninth and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Pinch runner Jordan Fedak (Clark, NJ) moved to third on a ground out and scored the game winning run on a wild pitch.

Capuano pitched the first eight innings of the game for the Devils in a no decision, struck out a career-high 13 batters and scattered seven hits. Craig earned his second win of the season and moved to 2-1 on the year.

Game Two: King's 13, FDU 6

After getting walked off in the opener, King's came out firing in the top of the first inning with five runs. The Monarchs went on to score at least one run in six of the seven innings en route to the 13-6 win.

King's used two RBI doubles and a three run homer to account for its five runs in the opening inning. FDU answered in the bottom of the first as Nodoro lifted a two run homer to right, his third of the season, to cut the Devils deficit to three.

Brandon Loner tallied his second home run of the day in the top of the fourth extending the lead for King's to six at 9-3. The visitors added four more to their total and led 13-3 before FDU scrapped together three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

The Devils plated three in the final frame on a two run double by Vincent Ferrigno (Marlboro, NJ) and an RBI single by Sean Wodell (Freehold, NJ), who ended game two with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate.

Gonnelli took the loss (2-3) on the bump for FDU as he lasted just one inning and surrendered five earned runs. Jeff Higgins (1-0) earned the win in relief as he tossed two shutout innings and scattered just two hits.

FDU will host New Jersey City University on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action beginning at 4:00 pm.
