Wilkes-Barre, Pa. (March 25) – Behind three home runs and a strong start by
Joseph Kastner (Springfield, NJ), the FDU-Florham baseball team defeated King's College (Pa.), 10-7, in game one of this weekend's Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) series.
FDU-Florham (12-4, 4-0 MAC Freedom) senior
Tommy Moore (Mansfield, NJ) went 4-for-5, with four RBI, while
Chris Kubas (New Providence, NJ) went 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBI of his own. The top four batters of FDU's lineup crossed the plate eight times and drove in eight combined runs.
King's (6-7, 0-4 MAC Freedom) saw all but one starter register at least one hit and had four student-athletes tally two hits in the series opener.
The Devils scored the first eight runs of the game before the hosts could crack the scoreboard. An RBI single to right by Moore and an RBI single to left by
Tyler McCulloch (Berkeley Heights, NJ) gave FDU a 2-0 lead after one.
FDU doubled its lead in the second with an RBI double by Kubas and an RBI single down the line by Moore. In the fourth, the Devils launched three home runs over the fence extending their lead to 8-0. After
Tyrus Chippendale (Middlesex, NJ) singled to begin the frame, Kubas lifted his third homer of the season to left. Moore, the very next batter, blasted his seventh home run of the season to left and then after a pitching change,
Matt Nodoro (Morristown, NJ) notched his second round tripper of the year.
Moore, now with seven home runs on the season, ranks fourth in NCAA Division III this year and in less than two complete years on the team, ranks fifth all-time in FDU history with 16 career home runs.
Both teams traded runs late in the game before King's put up a four spot in the bottom of the eighth. FDU relief pitcher
Sean Wodell (Freehold, NJ) retired the side after surrendering the runs and the game was called at the conclusion of the frame due to darkness.
Kastner (4-0) picked up the win as he allowed nine hits, three earned runs and struck out four in six innings on the mound, while Andrew Steidle took the loss (1-2) as he lasted just one inning for the Monarchs.
FDU and King's will wrap up the three game series in Madison, New Jersey tomorrow afternoon with a pair of seven inning contest. First pitch is slated for 12:00 pm at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark.
