Madison, NJ (March 23) – The FDU-Florham baseball team was no-hit this afternoon by the US Merchant Marine Academy and fell by a 9-1 final score at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark. With the result, FDU-Florham fell to 11-4 on the season.
Merchant Marine (5-9) was led by a 3-for-5 day at the plate by Noah Herdman, who also scored a run and posted a game-high five RBI. The top four hitters of Merchant Marine's lineup posted nine hits, scored seven runs and drove in nine runs on the day.
A two run homer by Herdman in the top of the first gave the visitors a 2-0 lead. The game remained that way until the fifth when the Mariners put together three in the fifth and four in the seventh for a 9-0 advantage. A pair of RBI doubles highlighted the scoring in the fifth, while a two run double and a pair of RBI singles accounted for the scoring in the sixth.
FDU scored its lone run of the game with two outs in the bottom of the eighth.
Sean Wodell (Freehold, NJ) walked and came around to score on a ball that hit by
Dylan Hode (Manalapan, NJ) and was misplayed by the right fielder.
Michael Monkevich earned the win for Merchant Marine on three shutout innings, while
DJ Gonnelli (Berkeley Heights, NJ) took the loss (2-2) on three innings, four hits and two earned runs.
FDU will return to MAC Freedom play with a three game set with King's College (Pa.) beginning on Friday afternoon in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
