Baseball Defeats SUNY Maritime, 5-3

Madison, NJ (March 22) – The FDU-Florham baseball team ran its winning streak to four today with a 5-3 non-conference victory over SUNY Maritime at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark.

FDU-Florham (11-3) was led by Tyrus Chippendale (Middlesex, NJ), who went 2-for-4 with two RBI from the leadoff spot as well as by strong pitching performances from all five student-athletes who took the mound this afternoon. The FDU pitching staff allowed just six hits to SUNY Maritime (8-4) over the course of the nine inning affair.

The Devils put up a four spot in the bottom of the fourth inning, breaking the scoreless ballgame up to that point. After back-to-back singles and a walk, Vincent Ferrigno (Marlboro, NJ) hit the ball to shortstop and on the throw the second baseman misplayed the ball which allowed both Tyler McCulloch (Berkeley Heights, NJ) and Jimmy Finnerty (Augusta, NJ) to score.

A two run single up the middle by Chippendale extended FDU's lead to 4-0 before SUNY Maritime made a pitching change.

The Privateers scored twice in the sixth – once on a sacrifice fly by Adam Mosca following a leadoff triple by L. Martinson and once via a bases loaded walk. An RBI double by Anthony Madigan in the top of the eighth cut the visitors deficit to two at 5-3.

Jonathan Rodenhaver (Port Republic, Md.) allowed just one unearned run in the eighth and Colby Craig (Chester, NJ) picked up his fifth save of the season in the ninth as FDU improved to 11-3 on the year. Craig's fifth save of the year sits him with the third most in all of Division III this year.

Christian Capuano (Vernon, NJ) got the start for the Devils and pitched three shutout innings with five strikeouts, while Michael Dunay (Stockholm, NJ) earned the win (2-0) in 2.1 innings of relief. Maritime starter Haydn Strycharz took the loss (0-1) on 3.1 innings, seven hits, four runs (three earned) and a strikeout.

FDU is scheduled to play the United States Merchant Marine Academy tomorrow afternoon in non-conference action at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark at 3:30 pm.
