Baseball Edged By No. 24 Kean, 4-2

Union, NJ (March 1) – The FDU-Florham baseball team was edged by No. 24 nationally-ranked Kean University, 4-2, on Tuesday afternoon at Jim Hynes '63 Baseball Stadium.

Today's game featured a tight pitchers' duel between FDU-Florham (4-2) and No. 24 Kean (9-0) as the score was locked at 1-1 through five innings of play. The hosts took advantage of an error by FDU as a groundball to third plated Brett Hilsheimer (3-for-4, two runs) after he led off the frame with a single. He moved to second on a balk and to third on the error before scoring the run.

After a shaky first, FDU-Florham starter Christian Capuano (Vernon, NJ) settled in, retired 12 of the next 14 batters he faced, kept the Devils in the game and allowed the visitors to knot the score at 1-1. Vincent Ferrigno (Marlboro, NJ) scored the game tying run in the top of the fifth. He walked to lead off the inning, moved to third on a double by Mark Geist (Middlesex, NJ) and crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Back-to-back walks by Kean starter Justin Diefenbach in the bottom of the fifth forced the hosts to make a pitching change as the Cougars brought in N. Rowan with two outs and the bases loaded. Rowan got Tommy Moore (Mansfield, NJ) to groundout to end the threat. The Devils also had the go ahead run on third in the top of the sixth, but once again Rowan got out of the jam.

Kean scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, once on a sacrifice fly and once on an RBI double to left center for a 3-1 edge. The Cougars added one more in the bottom of the seventh on another sacrifice fly before Jimmy Finnerty (Augusta, NJ) blasted his first in a Devils uniform over the fence in right which accounted for the 4-2 final.

Capuano (1-1) had a strong showing on the bump for the Devils, but took the loss, as he allowed five hits, three runs (one earned) and struck out five in 5.2 innings. Rowan earned the win in 4.1 innings of relief as he scattered two hits and allowed one run for Kean.

FDU-Florham (4-2) returns to Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark on Saturday, March 5 for a non-conference doubleheader with Rutgers-Camden beginning at 12:00 pm.
