Madison, NJ (November 8) – In its season opener, the FDU-Florham men's basketball team dropped a 75-56 final to Ursinus College in non-conference action in the Ferguson Recreation Center tonight.
Junior
Michael Dabas (Middletown, NJ) led the Devils with 15 points, while sophomore
Carson Woods (Phoenix, Ariz.) registered his second career double double with 13 points and ten rebounds in addition to a game high five assists in the effort tonight. Ursinus was guided by Ryan Hughes, who tallied 20 points, in the victory for the Bears.
Dabas scored the first two points of tonight's game for FDU-Florham before Ursinus went on a 21-6 run over the span of six and a half minutes to balloon their lead to 13 points (21-8). The Bears led by as many as 19 points in the first half at 32-13 following a three-point bucket by Kyle Maurer. The Bears went into the halftime break up by 14 points, 37-23.
FDU-Florham shot at a 56-percent clip from the floor (13-for-23) in the second half and was able to cut its deficit to as few as five points at 39-34 just six minutes out of the break following an 11-2 run.
The Devils hung with the Bears at a single digit deficit until there was nine minutes remaining in regulation (54-46). Ursinus followed that up with a 10-2 run to push its lead back to double digits at 64-48 over the next three minutes. That spurt by the Bears was enough to give them a 75-56 win on the road in the season opener for both teams tonight.
As a team, FDU-Florham shot 47.1-percent (24-for-51) from the floor, 26.7-percent (4-for-15) from three point range and 50.0-percent (4-for-8) from the free throw line. The Devils produced 38 points in the paint and 21 points off Ursinus turnovers.
Ursinus shot 55.6-percent (30-for-54) from the floor, 41.2-percent (7-for-17) from beyond the arc and 72.7-percent (8-for-11) from the free throw line. The Bears registered 44 points in the paint, 18 fast break points, 22 points off FDU-Florham turnovers and 21 points off the bench.
FDU-Florham will return to action on Friday, November 11 against Maine Maritime at 6:00 pm at the Stevenson Tip Off Tournament. The Devils will then play either Stevenson or Hartwick on Saturday, November 12 at 2pm or 4pm depending on Friday's results.
