Newark, NJ (November 12) – The second-seeded FDU-Florham men's soccer team saw its 2022 campaign end after a scoreless contest through 110 minutes went to penalty kicks and were outscored by the third-seeded Hunter Hawks, 4-2 on Saturday night at Rutgers-Newark.
The Devils garnered most of the offensive opportunities in the contest, outshooting the Hawks 23-6 and collecting 12 corners to Hunter's 0, but could not find the back of the net.
The Hawk's goalkeeper Matthew Heimowitz came up big in the contest, collecting a season-high and team season-best 13 saves including five during the overtime periods. FDU goalkeeper
Tiernan Grey (Staten Island, NY) tallied three saves during the match.
With neither team able to put in a goal after two overtime periods, the game went into penalty kicks for the chance to advance to the second round in the ECAC tournament against Rutgers-Newark tomorrow at 7:00 pm.
Hunter's Bradley Espejo shot first and was denied by Grey in the lower left portion of the net. FDU's
Oliver Trujillo (Bridgewater, NJ) aimed lower right and connected on his opportunity to take a 1-0 advantage. The Hawk's Arutuyn Kazaryan sank his opportunity low left but was answered by
Jonathan Shirley (Lincoln Park, NJ) who knocked in his shot high left to keep a 2-1 edge. Hunter's Conor Sullivan connected lower left and a big save by Heimowitz during
Christian Vriones' (Butler, NJ) opportunity kept it at a 2-2 tie. Hunter took the lead after Blaise Enama sunk his shot and after
Mattia Assante Di Cupillo (Toms River, NJ) missed high on his turn, Sammy Ahmed iced the match for the Hawks after he hit the higher left portion of the net to help the Hawks advance to the next round.
