Owings Mills, Md. (November 12) – Despite a career-high 31 points from
Matthew Johnson (Oak Ridge, NJ), the FDU-Florham men's basketball team fell to Hartwick College, 76-66, in the consolation final of the 2022 Stevenson University Tip Off Tournament.
Johnson's career-high 31 points came alongside a team-high seven rebounds for FDU-Florham (0-3).
Jamal Santana (Randolph, NJ) added 11 points and dished out three assists for the Devils, while
Brian Nichols (Roxbury, NJ) matched Johnson's seven boards in the effort. Anthony Girard led Hartwick (1-2) with 20 points and four rebounds today.
The Devils jumped out to an early 8-6 lead following a three point bucket from
James Zingaro (Stratford, NJ), but Hartwick reclaimed its edge with a quick 8-0 run for a 14-8 lead eight minutes into today's consolation final. FDU-Florham put together a 10-0 run of its own that was highlighted by a three point play from Johnson as well as a trey from
Carson Woods (Phoenix, Ariz.) for a 20-18 advantage with 7:27 to play in the first.
Hartwick outscored FDU-Florham, 12-5, over the final 3:40 of the opening stanza for a 39-30 lead at the break. The nine point edge for Hartwick was all it would need as the Hawks led by as many as 15 in the second half en route to the 76-66 final.
As a team, FDU-Florham shot 39.6-percent (21-for-53) from the floor, 33.3-percent (11-for-33) from behind the arc and 76.5-percent (13-for-17) from the free throw line. The Devils produced 18 points in the paint and 14 points off Hartwick turnovers.
Hartwick shot 53.1-percent (26-for-49) from the floor, 42.9-percent (9-for-21) from behind the arc and 78.9-percent (15-for-19) from the free throw line. Hartwick produced 26 points in the paint, 16 points off FDU-Florham turnovers and 15 points off the bench.
The Devils will return home on Wednesday, November 16 for a non-conference matchup with Rutgers-Newark University at 7:00 pm.
