Dallas, Pa. (October 1) – FDU-Florham football earned its first Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) victory of the season this afternoon as the Devils topped Misericordia University, 28-14, at Mangelsdorf Field to improve to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Senior running back
Nayson Brown (Red Bank, NJ) rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown, while sophomore quarterback
Ryon Thomas (Mattapoisett, Mass.) posted 162 passing yards and two total touchdowns (one rushing and one passing to
Connor Perez (Warwick, NY)).
FDU-Florham's final touchdown came from first-year
Lomorris House (Bridgeport, Conn.) as he returned the longest kickoff in program history 96-yards to account for the 28-14 final. Defensively, the Devils were paced by graduate student
Kenny Hands (Runnemede, NJ), who registered eight tackles (3.5 for a loss), two sacks, forced a fumble, blocked a field goal and posted two quarterback hurries.
After a scoreless first quarter, FDU-Florham posted all 28 of its points in the second stanza. Brown capped a nine play, 63-yard drive with a three-yard rush into the endzone for the 6-0 advantage. After forcing a punt on the next drive, the Devils drove 73 yards in just three plays that ended in a touchdown rush by Thomas. Thomas passed the ball to
Brendan Dennis (West Palm Beach, Fla.) to complete the two-point conversion as FDU-Florham led 14-0 early in the second.
The FDU-Florham forced Misericordia to punt after a three and out and added its third touchdown of the quarter on a 31-yard completion to Perez. The Cougars scored their first touchdown of the day in response to the Perez's reception to make the score 21-7 with 1:25 to play, but on the ensuing kickoff House returned the ball 96-yards into the endzone for the 28-7 lead at the break.
The kickoff return by House marked the longest kickoff return in program history and was only longer than Jay Sciortino's return (90 yards) back in the program's first year of competition in 1974.
The third quarter was highlighted by a blocked 30-yard field goal by Hands as he held the Cougars scoreless in the stanza. Misericordia added one touchdown in the fourth, but FDU-Florham came away victorious, 28-14, for their first MAC win of the year.
FDU-Florham will return to Madison for a conference matchup with Widener University on Saturday, October 8 at 12:00 pm at Robert T. Shields Field.
