MADISON, NJ (March 6, 2021)- FDU Men's Lacrosse opened their 2021 campaign at Robert T. Shields Field on Saturday afternoon, falling to Widener University in a non-conference matchup, 22-8. With the loss, the Devils fall to 0-1 overall on the young season while the Pride improve to 1-0.
First Quarter
Widener opened the game with control of the first seven minutes, scoring the first five goals on 12 shots. Credit to Devils goaltender,
Dan Schlupp who made seven saves for the Devils during the barrage. Junior,
Zane Johnston got the Devils on the board with 3:58 remaining in the first quarter. One-minute later, Widener had the response to regain a five-goal advantage. The pride would score two more in the frame, holding an 8-1 advantage after 15-minutes.
Second Quarter
After Widener added two more to their lead less than three minutes into the quarter, Sophomore,
Michael Stewart, scored his first of the season assisted from sophomore,
Lucas Berghahn. Less than 15-seconsds later, it was the Devils again, this time from senior,
Drew Bukowiec, at 7:16 from Stewart. After another Schlupp save, Widener capitalized on the rebound, increasing their lead to 11-3. Four more Pride goals brought the score to 15-3 at the halftime break.
Third Quarter
FDU came out hot in the second half, thanks to Stewart's second goal of the game and Berghahn's second assist. At 12:53 the Devils struck again, this time off the stick of senior,
Tyler Garcia. After that, Widener took command of the quarter, scoring the games next four goals and taking a 19-5 lead into the final 15.
Fourth Quarter
The fourth quarter saw the Pride score four straight to increase their lead to 22-5, before FDU hit an offensive stride. Starting at the 4:19 mark with Johnston's second of the game, followed by Bukoweic twice within one-minute of either. The late game surge was not enough for the Devils, as Widener secured a 22-8 victory as the buzzer sounded.
Lead Devils
Bukoweic and Stewart led the way for FDU offensively, with Drew scoring three goals on four shots and Michael recording two goals and two assists on three shots.
Assisting the Cause
Along with Stewart, Garcia and Berghahn recorded two assists for FDU, while first-year,
Nicholas Perillo finished with one, for a total of seven on the day.
Next Up
The Devils return to action, Saturday, March 13, when they travel to Lebanon Valley College for a 1:00pm contest.
