Softball Splits DH at Lycoming College

WILLIAMSPORT, PA (March 27, 2021)- FDU Softball traveled to Lycoming College for a MAC Freedom doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, splitting the games with a game one loss, 6-2 and game two extra innings win, 4-3.
 
Game 1- 6--3, L
First-year Dolly Garguilo started in the circle for the Devils.
 
Led by senior Taylor Tobey with a single in the top of the first, followed by singles from sophomore Kristina Pelano and senior Nicole Casale, FDU grabbed an early 1-0 lead. Senior Danie Sames followed suite with an RBI single of her own, increasing the Devils lead to 2-0. All in all, FDU knocked five hits in the half inning. Garguillo sat the Warriors down in the bottom of the first and FDU loaded the bases in the top of the second, looking to strike again, but Lyco shut the door.
 
Building off the big out, the Warriors scored four runs in the bottom of the second to steal a 4-2 advantage. Two more Lycoming runs in the bottom of the third brought the lead to 6-2. The scoring stopped there, with each teams pitching staffs allowing zero runs over the final 3 and a half innings. Lycoming took the game, 6-2.
 
Six different Devils recorded two or more hits in the game, with Tobey leading the way with three.
 
Game 2- 4-3(10), W
Junior Cierra Hoffman started on the rubber for FDU.
 
Hoffman held the Warriors off in the first two innings, before Lyco scored the games first run in the bottom of the third. FDU responded immediately, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth, started with a double from Sames, scoring first-year Heather Priante. With the game tied at 1-1, senior Hunter Ruppel drove in Sames on a SAC fly to give FDU the 2-1 lead. Lycoming responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth the ty the game at two. Each team added a run in the seventh to send the game to extra's.
 
Both pitchers dueled through the first two innings of bonus softball, before the Devils broke through in the top of the tenth. With Casale on third base, Pelano ripped a triple down the right field line to score Casale and the game winning run for FDU.
 
Going the distance
The Devils Hoffman threw all ten innings for FDU in the win, striking out six Warriors in the process.
 
Lead Devil
Tobey crushed the ball all over the place for FDU, finishing the DH 4-for-8 with a run scored.
 
 
Next Up
FDU returns to action on Wednesday, March 31 for a doubleheader at King's College starting at 12:00 pm.
